Two roadside vendors from Mumbai have been arrested after a 19-year-old individual died after eating chicken shawarma from their roadside stall in Trombay, said police.

The deceased, identified as Prathamesh Bhokse, bought the food item from the stall of the accused on May 3, the official said.

On May 4, Prathamesh Bhokse suffered from stomach ache and vomiting and went to a municipal hospital nearby to get medical treatment. He later again felt unwell, following which his family members took him to the civic-run KEM Hospital on May 5.

According to the official from Trombay police station, he was sent home after being treated by a doctor. However, as the man’s condition persisted, he was taken to KEM Hospital again on May 5 evening, where a doctor examined him and subsequently admitted him. The man died on May 6, he said.

The vendors have been identified as Anand Kamble and Mohammad Ahmed Raiza Shaikh, said the police.

The police said that a case has been registered against the shopkeeper under sections 304 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Further details into the matter are awaited.

Earlier, in April 2022, more than 52 persons fell sick, and one died after eating shawarma from an eatery in Cheruvathur in Kerala. A 16-year-old girl named Devananda lost her life after food poisoning after consuming the dish.

In September last year, a 14-year-old girl who consumed chicken shawarma at a restaurant in Tamil Nadu’s Namakkal was found dead at her residence. Moreover, a total of 43 people, including four of the victim’s family members, were admitted with severe fever, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhoea after eating the dish.

In October 2023, a youth from Kochi died of suspected food poisoning after consuming shawarma from a restaurant at Mavelipuram in Kerala. The post-mortem report of the 22-year-old youth cited the reason for his death as septicaemia, a serious bloodstream infection.
