A peculiar case has come to light in the Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh, wherein a hostel owner has lodged a complaint with the police, accusing his tenant, Mohammad Sohail, of bringing numerous women to the premises. Local Hindu activists have alleged that Sohail is involved in a Love Jihad syndicate,  wherein he targets and converts Hindu women. However, as of now, the police have not accepted any formal complaint and have taken preventive measures against the accused.

Here’s what we know so far:

On May 5, residents of the Vinoba Nagar colony informed Hindu organisations that Mohammad Sohail, a tenant at Saluja hostel in the L-10 area, was bringing a new girl to his room every day. Sohail had informed the landlord that he was a student preparing for banking exams and was enrolled at the Mahindra Coaching Centre.

Local Hindu activists claim that Sohail is engaged in ‘Love Jihad’ activities and is targeting Hindu women for conversion.

On May 5, members of Hindu organisations, including the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, arrived at the hostel and found a woman in Sohail’s room, in a compromising situation.

One of the activists, Dhananjay Giri, told the Organiser that they informed the woman’s family, who came to the hostel to take her back. The family did not want a police case, so they were allowed to leave. The woman, a native of Korba city, had moved to Bilaspur to prepare for competitive exams while her father worked in the SECL coal mines.

He added that when the police asked about Sohail to the woman she did not say a single word against him.

The Hindu activists called the police, who then contacted the woman’s parents and brought them to the station.

Based on the hostel owner’s complaint, which accused Sohail of bringing women to the premises and exploiting them, police detained Sohail.

The complaint letter, accessed by the Organiser, mentioned that the colony residents were concerned about the illegal activities affecting the family-oriented environment. They provided the police with videos and photos of the accused with various women.

Despite the outrage and the complaint, some argue that the actions of both consenting adults should not be considered illegal. However, residents demand that Sohail be detained for tarnishing the colony’s image and running ‘Love Jihad’ syndicate.

In response to the situation, the police took preventive measures against Sohail, as he had not committed any crime under the law.
