A disturbing case of religiously motivated violence against a Hindu woman has emerged from the Nayanagar Police Station in the Mira Road area of Mumbai. The accused, identified as Mohsin Sheikh, allegedly coerced the woman into converting to Islam after she rejected his marriage proposal. The heinous acts perpetrated against her include administering an intoxicating substance, multiple instances of rape, and blackmail.

The accused, along with his family members Imran Bagwan, Jafar Sheikh, Mobin Sheikh, Ashfaq Sheikh, and Shahjaan Sheikh, who reportedly physically assaulted the woman, have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The sections include 420 (cheating and dishonestly), 376(2)(n) (repeated rape), 313 (causing miscarriage without the woman’s consent), 354 (assault or criminal force), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation), 34 (act committed by several people with common intention), and 328 (causing hurt by means of poison).

According to the First Information Report (FIR), Mohsin Sheikh initially met the victim during the Ganeshotsav festival in 2023 and cultivated a friendship with her. Despite the victim’s rejection of his advances and insistence on maintaining only a platonic relationship, Mohsin persisted.

In a harrowing account detailed in the FIR, the victim recalls being fed biryani laced with a toxic substance by Mohsin, leading to a state of unconsciousness. She alleges waking up in a compromising situation, having been raped. Mohsin subsequently pressured her to convert to Islam, threatening her with blackmail using derogatory videos of her and further instances of sexual exploitation.

“I thought he was offering me because we were friends. But his intentions were not good. He fed me Biryani. After that, I began feeling dizzy and after some time I zoned out. On waking after a few hours, I saw myself in a bedroom with no clothes on my body. I was raped,” the woman said in the FIR.

Despite her refusals, the victim recounts being subjected to further assaults and coerced conversions, culminating in a forced marriage proposal and physical violence, including the shaving of her head.

“He told me that he wanted me to get converted to Islam and wear a burqa and behave like Muslims. But I denied and burned the burqa,” the victim said.

“He kept on sexually exploiting me for several months and threatened me viral those videos if I failed to agree to what he said,” she added.

Upon seeking assistance from the nearby police station, the victim faced further hostility from the accused’s family members, who initially claimed willingness to facilitate marriage but resorted to violence against her.

The woman promptly sought police intervention and filed a complaint at the Nayanagar police station. Mohsin Sheikh has been arrested, with reports indicating his admission to exploiting the woman solely for his sexual gratification. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
