Nanotechnology has the potential to revolutionise the healthcare industry (hospitals) in many ways. It can help in diagnostics, disease monitoring, surgical devices, regenerative medicine, vaccine development, and drug delivery

Here are some ways nanotechnology can transform hospitals

Nanotechnologies can significantly improve medical diagnostics by making them less expensive and more convenient. A great example of this is “smart pills,” which enable doctors and patients to monitor a staggering number of diseases. The way a smart pill works will depend on the disease it is meant to treat or diagnose
Another promising nanotechnology pathway is nanorobots, which contain small motors that allow them to navigate to particular regions of the body. Nanorobots can be ingested or injected and deliver themselves to the disease site, take pictures, and send them to the doctor or patient. Nanotechnology can be leveraged for ultra-precise disease treatment.

Nanofibers are being used in wound dressings and surgical textiles, as well as in implants, tissue engineering, and artificial organ components. Scientists are working on developing ‘smart bandages’, which when left on the site, will absorb themselves into the tissue once the wound heals. Embedded nanofibres in these smart bandages can contain clotting agents, antibiotics, and even sensors to detect signs of infection.

Nanotech-based wearables have embedded nanosensors in the cloth that record medical data such as heartbeat, sweat components, and blood pressure. It helps save lives by alerting the wearer and medical professionals of any adverse changes faced by the body.

Blockchain transforming Hospitals

Blockchain technology can be applied to the medical industry in a variety of ways, leading to immensely reduced costs and new ways for patients to access healthcare. Blockchain can make health information systems more secure, more efficient, more accessible, and more reliable. It offers high security, tracks medicines, and gives ownership back to individuals who have the right to consent for its use. Blockchain is a distributed ledger system that records transactions in a database made up of “blocks” of data that are “chained” together.

Here are some ways how blockchain can transform hospitals:

Secure sharing of medical records: Blockchain technology can help hospitals share medical records securely and efficiently. Patients can have control over their own medical records and can grant access to doctors or hospitals as needed. This can help reduce errors and improve patient outcomes.

Drug traceability: Blockchain technology can help hospitals track drugs from the manufacturer to the patient. This can help reduce counterfeit drugs and ensure that patients receive the correct medication.

Clinical trials: Blockchain technology can help hospitals conduct clinical trials more efficiently by securely sharing data between different organisations. This can help speed up the process of bringing new drugs to market

Supply chain management: Blockchain technology can help hospitals manage their supply chains more efficiently by tracking inventory and ensuring that supplies are delivered on time.

Robotics transforming Hospitals

The incorporation of robotics in healthcare environments is becoming increasingly common. Currently, task automation is adapted to any sector and robotics in medicine is frequently used thanks, in part, to the evolution of technologies such as 5G, AI or augmented reality.

The use of robots in hospitals has become a mainstay for the healthcare sector, especially in recent times. Robotics applications in medicine, and in hospitals in particular, have experienced a definite boost in the fight against COVID-19.

Collaborative mobile robots can also become excellent hospital assistants, providing support in operating rooms, ICUs or risky areas for the healthcare team. Mobile robotics applications have also become tools that greatly improve the quality of life and provide autonomy to dependent people.

Robotics can transform hospitals in many ways. Here are some pointers:

  1. Robotics can help in surgeries by making small incisions and movements, reducing blood loss and complications, lowering surgery costs, and optimising workflows. Surgeons who use the robotic system find that for many procedures it enhances precision, flexibility, and control during the operation and allows them to better see the site, compared with traditional techniques.
  2. Robots can deliver medications to patients using autonomous navigation technology. They rush medications directly from the hospital pharmacy to a patient’s bedside. The robots use walkways and elevators travelled by patients and staff throughout the day, and can even call an elevator to pick them up.
  3. Robots can monitor patients and provide support and care. For example, robots can be used to check vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels.
  4. Robots can make hospital logistics more efficient. For example, robots can be used to transport supplies throughout the hospital.
  5. Robots can perform human functions like making sick or elderly patients feel less lonely. Conversational and companion robots can help these patients stay positive, remind them to take their medicine and perform simple routine check-ups like temperature, blood pressure, and sugar levels.

Automation transforming Hospitals

Automation is transforming the healthcare industry as it can simply work in the background without requiring constant attention by your staff. It can benefit clinicians, care teams, informaticists, Biomed/IT, and telehealth and aftercare specialists streamline workflows, minimising manual documentation, enhance the care experience for patients, and extending care beyond the hospital and into the home. Hospital automation is a management approach that utilises modern technology to automate processes in various hospital sectors

  • Automation in hospitals applies to various administrative aspects such as billing, training, and maintenance, as well as to things like EHR management and patient response.
  • Automation is used to lower costs and improve the quality of care, as well as to aid in analysing patient and operations data.
  • Digital transformation has a substantial role to play in optimising hospitals’ operational decision-making, which in turn can lead to improvements in the quality and efficiency of care and patients’ access to it. Here are four key areas where hospitals can leverage digital transformation to improve operational decision-making: patient flow, staffing, scheduling, and supply chain management.
