In a jubilant display of devotion and unity, Hindu Americans, joined by the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh USA (HSS), celebrated the historic inauguration of the Sri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The Sri Ram Pran Pratishtha, marking the consecration of Bhagwan Sri Ram at his birthplace after five centuries, became a significant milestone for the Hindu civilisation. The celebrations resonated across the United States, embracing various events such as car rallies, temple services, and cultural gatherings, accompanied by the enthusiastic participation of civic officials and Interfaith leaders.
The festivities unfolded in a diverse array of activities, reflecting the rich tapestry of Hindu culture and spirituality. Car rallies, an emblematic part of the celebrations, were organised with fervour across 21 states, including Greater Boston, Chicagoland, Seattle, Houston, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Charlotte, Dallas Fort Worth, San Francisco, Denver, Tampa, Philadelphia, Portland, and other metropolitan areas. These rallies, featuring Tesla light shows and impressive turnouts, symbolised the nationwide joy and enthusiasm surrounding the inauguration.
One standout event was the car rally in Greater Boston, where over 500 participants in 250 cars covered a remarkable 70+ miles despite frigid sub-zero windchill temperatures. In Chicagoland, the ALTGC Temple in the Mall of India witnessed over a thousand devotees celebrating with drum beats and lights, creating an atmosphere of spiritual exuberance. The Ram Yatra car rally in Seattle spanned 12 hours, covering 13 temples, while a similar rally in Houston involved over 200 cars visiting 11 temples. The scale and diversity of these events underscored the nationwide significance and unity in celebrating Shri Ram Pran Pratishtha.
In Sacramento, a unique ‘padayatra’ captured the hearts of participants, as children and adults alike joined a procession, holding pictures of Shri Ram and chanting “Jai Shri Ram” with unwavering devotion. Additionally, over 550 Hindu American students from 108 universities and high schools came together online to mark the inauguration of the Ram Mandir, showcasing the engagement and involvement of the younger generation in the celebration of their cultural heritage.
HSS volunteers played a pivotal role in attending and supporting these events, fostering a sense of community and unity. An educational exhibition in New Jersey on the theme of “Ramayan around the world” highlighted the cultural and historical significance of the occasion, further enriching the celebration.
The celebrations received widespread support and greetings from various leaders, including mayors, congressmen, state senators, community leaders, and Interfaith officials. Mayor Eric Adams of New York City emphasised the importance of the occasion for Hindus, acknowledging its role in uplifting spirituality and promoting unity. Noted author and historian David Frawley termed the Shri Ram Temple’s inauguration as a “civilizational revival,” emphasising the enduring significance of Sri Ram in history. Congressman Dr. Rich McCormick of Georgia praised the Hindu community, calling the moment a “huge accomplishment after 500 years of struggle.”
Times Square in New York became a focal point for celebrations, with American Hindu Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswati referring to the temple as “a mandir of peace, of unity, of love, of dharma, of oneness.” Charlie Wiles, Executive Director of the Center for Interfaith Cooperation, witnessed the consecration ceremony in Indiana and expressed his joy at being part of the historic event, noting the passion, revelry, and devotion on display. The inclusive nature of the celebrations was evident as leaders from the Muslim community in Houston and the Sikh Gurudwara in San Antonio participated, reflecting a multicultural spirit.
HSS USA extended its gratitude to the Hindu community, temples, community organisations, and well-wishers for their active participation in the celebrations. The organisation emphasised the role of such events in fostering unity and understanding among diverse communities in the United States. As HSS continues its commitment to community service and cultural education, the organisation looks forward to future celebrations and collaborative initiatives that promote harmony and goodwill among all communities.
The Sri Ram Pran Pratishtha celebrations in the United States were a testament to the vibrant and inclusive nature of the Hindu American community. The events showcased not only religious fervour but also a commitment to cultural preservation and interfaith understanding.
