India takes ‘quantum-leap’ in 5G technology, surpasses G20 nations by significant margin

India has made massive growth in global mobile download speed, making it in the list of top Oookla Speed Test Global Index List. India has moved 72 positions up in the list and now has reached the 47th position and, in the process, has surpassed many G20 nations.

About Oookla

Oookla is a Seattle-based organisation known for its fixed broadband and mobile network testing application, data, and analysis. The new ranking of India in the Speed Text Index is of huge significance because it is used by internet service providers, carriers, businesses, universities, and government agencies alike.

India’s 5G Push

According to the report, India has achieved this feat because of the launch of 5G services in the country. The country’s performance has seen 3.59 times increase since the introduction of 5G, the report said. The median download speeds improved to 50.25 Mbps in August 2023 from 13.87 Mbps in September 2022. This improvement has led to India’s rise in the Speedtest Global Index, moving up 72 places from the 119th place to the 47th position.

In the index, besides eclipsing the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India has moved above some of the G20 nations like Mexico (90th), Turkey (68th ), the UK (62nd ), Japan (58th), Brazil (50th place) and South Africa (48th Place). The 5G deployments have led to an overall user experience all across telecom circles, with operators investing in backhaul infrastructure.

In fact, 5G, has brought not only speed, it has brought higher customer satisfaction as indicated by the Net Promoter Score, which shows that 5G customers in India are the most intensive data consumers consistently rate their network operators more positively compared to the 4G users.

Largest Subscribers

Oookla also said that mobile users in India are the most data-intensive consumers in the world. It was the country’s poor 4G networks which were unable to keep up with the expectations, primarily due to network congestion and spectrum constraints. In order to tackle this situation, the Indian Government launched many 5G technologies by operators like Airtel and Reliance Jio.

Since the launch, there has been a substantial increase in 5G subscribers, and operators still have ambitious rolled-out plans. In fact, during his Independence Day address this year, Prime Minister Modi announced that a task force has been set up for 6G services. “My country is the fastest country to roll out the 5G. We have reached more than 700 districts, and now we are getting ready for 6G,” he said.

Additionally, in nine telecom circles, including Andhra Pradesh, Kolkata, North East, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Punjab, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh (West), the median 5G download speeds were below 100Mbps ranged from 10.37 Mbps in October 2022 due to the early phase. However, by August 2023, the median download speeds rose to 240 Mbps across all telecom areas, especially Kolkata leading the pack with a median speed of 385.50 Mbps.

Top Ten Countries (Oookla)

The country that has bagged the first position is the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with 210.89 Mbps, followed by Qatar (192.71), Kuwait (153.86 Mbps), Norway (134. 45 Mbps), Denmark (124 Mbps). The sixth place was captured by China (122.89 Mbps), followed by South Korea (120.08) Mbps, Macau (112.3 Mbps), Iceland (110.2 Mbps), Netherlands (107.42 Mbps) and India (50.1 Mbps)
