Elon Musk’s Tesla in talks to set up India factory for electric cars starting at Rs 20 lakhs — Report

America-based Electric vehicle maker Tesla is actively pursuing talks with the Indian government to establish a local factory. This strategic move aims to enable Tesla to manufacture EVs in India and offer them at more affordable prices.

According to Government sources cited by The Times of India, Tesla plans to produce up to 500,000 EVs annually, with prices starting at Rs 20 lakh.

In May this year, Tesla expressed its interest in building a local factory in India, and as per the TOI report, the company intends to utilise the facility as an export base, similar to its operations in China.

It is to be noted that, executives of Tesla visited India and held talks with Indian Ministers and bureaucrats in May on establishing a manufacturing base for cars and batteries in India.

This development could significantly boost India’s emerging EV market.

The discussions with the Indian Government show a shift in strategy for the US electric car maker.

Last year, talks stalled after the Modi Government refused to agree to a request from Tesla seeking lower import taxes on cars, which can be as much as 100 per cent.

Earlier this year, in May, the Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that Tesla is welcome to manufacture them in the country. The carmaker is eligible for subsidies only if it is locally produced.

“Tesla is welcome to set up its manufacturing plant in India. The carmaker is eligible for subsidies and discounts, however, that is only if the cars are made in India, not built in China and brought here,” he said.

India was keen for Tesla to manufacture vehicles locally, but the company said it wanted to export its cars first so that it could test the strength of demand.

India has strong potential for a sustainable energy future, including solar power, stationary battery packs and electric vehicles, Billionaire Elon Musk said after meeting PM Modi on his recent US visit, adding he hopes to bring SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service to the country as well.

Tesla vehicles are known for their long electric range, thanks to advanced battery technology and efficient powertrain systems. They incorporate Autopilot, Tesla’s advanced driver-assistance system, which enables features such as semi-autonomous driving, lane-keeping, and adaptive cruise control.

Tesla has also developed an extensive network of supercharger stations, which allow Tesla owners to recharge their vehicles quickly during long-distance travel. In addition to cars, Tesla has expanded its offerings to include solar energy products, energy storage solutions (Powerwall and Powerpack), and renewable energy generation.

Tesla’s innovative approach to electric vehicles has contributed to accelerating the adoption of sustainable transportation and driving the transition towards a greener future. The company continues to push boundaries in terms of technology, performance, and energy efficiency, aiming to make electric vehicles the norm rather than the exception.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, Tesla cars are also very efficient. Tesla’s electric motors have high torque, which means they can reach high speeds in no time. In addition, Tesla’s autonomous driving technology allows drivers to relax and enjoy the road, while being safe.

As of December 2022, Tesla offers four car models: Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y, and a semi-truck. Tesla’s first vehicle, the first-generation Tesla Roadster, is no longer sold. Tesla has plans for a second-generation Roadster and a pickup called the Cybertruck.
