On July 9, 2023, the United States of America said that it conducted an aerial strike in Syria that led to the death of Usamah-Al Muhajir, a prominent Islamic State leader

According to the statement released by the US Central Command, “The strike conducted on July 9, 2023, was conducted by the same MQ-9 Reaper Drone that had earlier in the day harassed by Russian Aircraft in an encounter that had lasted almost for two hours.”

However, it was unclear how the US military confirmed that the person killed was Muhajir. The Central Command did not give any details about him. The statement also said there were no indications of civilians killed in the strike. The military was assessing reports that a non-combatant or civilian may have been injured.

“We have made it clear that we remain committed to the defeat of Daesh (ISIS) throughout the region, General Erik Kurilla, the commander of the US Central Command, said.

Washington has made raids and operations against ISIS operatives in the West Asian nation of Syria and arrested leaders who have taken shelter in areas under Turkish-supported rebel control after the group lost its last territory in Syria in 2019.

The US-led campaign, which killed former ISIS leader Abu-Bakr-al Baghdadi who declared himself to be a caliph of all Muslims, has since targeted surviving leaders, many of whom are thought to have planned attacks overseas. As per American military commanders, ISIS remains a significant threat to the region though its capabilities have been degraded and its ability to re-establish its terror networks weakened.

On July 5, 2023, the USAF (US Airforce) released video footage in which the Russian jets and drones were locked in an encounter, which forced the drones to take evasive action. The USAF said, “These events represent a new level of unprofessional and unsafe action by the Russian Air Forces operating in Syria.”

Lt General Alex Grynkevich, the commander of the Ninth Force in the Middle East, said that one of the pilots moved their aircraft in front of a drone and engaged the afterburner, reducing the drone operator’s ability to safely operate the aircraft.

“This is the second instance of dangerous behaviours of the Russian pilots within the past twenty-four hours, with the first occurring on July 5, 2023, at approximately 10:40 AM local time he added.

The US military has also urged the Russian Forces in Syria to “cease the reckless behaviour and adhere to the standards of behaviour expected of a professional air force, so we can resume our focus on the enduring defeat of ISIS,” he said.

The Head of the Russian Reconciliation Centre for Syria, Rear Admiral Oleg Gurinov, said that the Russian and Syrian militaries had started a six-day joint training which culminated on July 10, 2023.

In comments carried out by the Syrian State Media, Gurinov said that Moscow was concerned about the flights of drones by the US-led coalition over Northern Syria, calling them “systematic violations of protocols” designed to avoid clashes between the two militaries.

At its peak in 2014, ISIS had a firm grip over the territories of Iraq and Syria. Despite being pushed back in both countries, the group carries out insurgent attacks and underscores the ongoing challenges posed by their presence.

The US Military Strike against Usamah al-Muhajir, the ISIS leader, is part of its ongoing efforts to counter the threat posed by the extremist group in the region.

The US and the allied forces of the region have carried out a consistent advantage against the remaining ISIS leaders operating in Syria. Ever since the death of Baghdadi, ISIS has been operating as cells. The US also maintains a force of about 900 troops deployed in war-torn Syria. They primarily work with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Force in their struggle against Islamic State militants.
