In the early morning hours on June 9, 2023, five foreign terrorists were killed in an encounter by the joint parties of the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police in Kupwara, the Kashmir Zone Police said. The officials confirmed that a search of the area is underway.

“Five Foreign Terrorists were killed in an encounter, and a search operation is underway,” said the Additional Director General of the Police (ADGP) of Kashmir police, Vijay Kumar.

The encounter broke out after security forces received input on the presence of terrorists in the Jumagund Area near the LOC (Line of Control). Jumagund is a village near the Line of Control (LOC) in the Kupwara Sector.

In a tweet, the Kashmir Zone police said- “An encounter underway between terrorists and joint parties of the Indian Army and the police on a specific input of Kupwara Police in the Jumagund area near the LOC of Kupwara District. Further details shall follow.”

On June 13, 2023, two terrorists were shot dead near the LOC in Kupwara, police said. The Kashmir Zone Police shared the news on Twitter. The police said that incident took place in Dobanar Macchal Area.

“Two terrorists have been neutralised in a joint operation of the Indian Army and Kupwara Police in Dobanar Macchal Area (LoC) of Kupwara District. The search still continues,” it tweeted.

Earlier this month, on June 2, 2023, a terrorist was killed in an encounter with the security forces in the Rajouri District of Jammu and Kashmir. The army and the police launched a joint cordon and search operation after noticing suspicious movements in the forest area of Dassal Gujran near Rajouri, a defence official said.

He revealed that the search operation turned into an encounter after the terrorist fired upon the forces, who retaliated.

On June 15, 2023, the Indian Army once again foiled an infiltration attempt by the terrorists who were pushed across the LOC. A huge amount of consignment, especially arms and ammunition, along with food and medicines, have been recovered.

Lt. Col Devender Anand said that the recovered items include one AK-47 Assault Rifle with nine magazines and 438 rounds, two pistols with four magazines and 60 rounds, six hand grenades, clothing and medicines. “By this swift action, another infiltration attempt was foiled, which had the potential to disturb peace in Poonch District.

The medicines included four syringes made by Injection Sys Pvt Ltd, Gadoon, Amazai in Pakistan, Ten Ibuprofen tablets made in Abbott Lab, Karachi, 20 paracetamol tablets made in GSK Limited, Karachi and others. A wire cutter and digging shovel has been recovered.

This is the first major infiltration attempt by the militants in Kupwara Sector this year. Since India and Pakistan agreed to revive the 2003 ceasefire on the borders, the infiltration attempts by the militants have decreased drastically in the Valley.

However, there have been several attempts of infiltration by the terrorists in the Poonch and Rajouri sectors of Jammu and Kashmir, which are turning into new battlegrounds for the militants and security forces.
