Guwahati: Huge crackdown against fake gold rackets across Assam. Assam police have arrested seventy-one fake gold smugglers from several districts of the State. The whole operation came after the controversial death of the police sub inspector Junmoni Rabha on May 16. Lady Singham fame Junmoni Rabha was killed in a mysterious road accident in the Jakhalabandha area of Nagaon district. Her family alleged that the fake gold racket killed the daredevil young police officer.

State Government immediately transferred the investigation to the CID, but it was the demand of the public to conduct the investigation by CBI. On May 20, the State Government handed the investigation to the CBI. It should be mentioned that deceased police officer Junmoni Rabha came to the limelight when she arrested her fiance in a fraud case in 2021. The home department reserve closed four police officials after the death of SI Junmoni Rabha on May 16. Moreover, the home department transferred Nagaon SP Lenna Dole, Lakhimpur SP Bedanta Madhab Rajkhowa and Additional SP Runa Neog. It was a viral audio clip of a police official in Nagaon district and an eyewitness confession which brought the accidental death of police officer Junmoni Rabha in another direction.

In the viral audio clip one police official of Nagaon was saying that SI Junmoni Rabha was murdered by the fake gold racket and some police personnel might also be involved in the murder. Another eyewitness said that the vehicle of SI Junmoni Rabha was parked in the middle of the highway, and the truck intentionally hit the vehicle and crushed it.

Assam DGP GP Singh said in a press meeting that for a fair and neutral investigation, the case had been handed over to CBI. He also assured that within the next 30 days, the fake gold and FICN racket would be disseminated from the State.

Out of the 71 Muslim fake gold and FICN arrested on May 19, 10 are from Lakhimpur, eight from Baksa, ten from Nagaon, four from Karbi Anglong, six from Morigaon, 11 from Sonitpur, nine from Kokrajhar, four from Dhubri district. It should be mentioned that the Muslim area of Bangalmara in the Lakhimpur district is the hub of fake gold and FICN rackets in Assam. Mostly, Bangladesh-origin Muslims are involved with this fake gold and FICN racket. It is found that these gangs have links with some international gangs which smuggle fake gold and FICN to the State.
