The second batch of Indians evacuated from violence-hit Sudan arrived in Mumbai on April 27 afternoon. “Another #OperationKaveri flight comes to Mumbai. 246 more Indians come back to the motherland,” External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar tweeted.

India is in touch with all sides in Sudan to ensure the safety of Indians stranded in the strife-torn African nation, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on April 27. Under ‘Operation Kaveri’, India has evacuated nearly 1,100 people from Sudan so far and is looking at rescuing more of its citizens before the end of the tenuous ceasefire between the regular army and a paramilitary force.

On April 27, a batch of evacuees flew back to Mumbai from Jeddah airport on an Indian Air Force C17 Globe master flight, carrying 246 passengers. The first batch of 360 Indian nationals arrived in Delhi on April 26 after describing their experience in Sudan and their journey back like being on a “deathbed.”

“The 4th IAF C-130J flight takes off from Port Sudan for Jeddah with 128 passengers. This is the sixth batch of Indians to be evacuated from Sudan under #OperationKaveri, taking the total to nearly 1100 persons,” tweeted Arindam Bagchi, Spokesperson, MEA.

Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwarta said a third naval ship, INS Tarkash, had reached Port Sudan to rescue Indians.

Through Operation Kaveri, India has been working hard to bring back its stranded citizens from Sudan before the end of a tenuous ceasefire between the regular army and a paramilitary force. The evacuation mission involves transporting evacuees from Sudan to the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah, from where they are returning to their motherland.
