On April 22, as per the reports, police said they arrested two persons from Assam’s Karbi Anglong district and seized a heroin consignment worth around Rs 8 crore.

In the early hours of April 22, a joint team of Karbi Anglong district police and CRPF set up a checkpoint in front of the Lahorijan police post, led by the Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Bokajan.

SDPO of Bokajan John Das said, “At about 12.30 am the police team intercepted a truck. On being thorough search of the vehicle a total of 116 soap boxes containing 1.3 kg of heroin recovered which are concealed in the tarpaulin of the truck. We have arrested two persons in this regard. The market value of the seized drugs is estimated at around Rs 8 crore”.

Police arrested two individuals; they were identified as Aijul Haque (50 years old) and Dildar Hussain (18 years old).

During the investigation, the police learned that the consignment came from Manipur.

A few days back, on April 20, Assam Police confiscated a significant quantity of illegal drugs worth Rs 3 crore and detained two individuals in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.

Even this operation was co-jointly planned by the district police of Karbi Anglong, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) acted on a tip-off and placed a checkpoint in the evening. The joint team intercepted the vehicle and arrested two people.

Regarding the bust, SDPO John Das said, “On being thorough search of the vehicle, the police team recovered a total of 45 soap cases containing 529.36 grams of heroin. The heroin packets were hidden inside the spare tyre of the vehicle. We have arrested two persons from Manipur. The market value of the seized drugs is estimated at around Rs 3 crore”.

The police identified the arrested persons as Th Boby (21 years old) and Pusham Abdul Hasim (26 years old).

A similar drug bust happened on February 27 in Assam’s capital Guwahati. The anti-drugs unit of the police busted a consignment of 1.056 Kg of heroin in the Nalapara area, which is under the Basistha police station. The market value of the seized consignment is around Rs 8 crore. Police arrested the three most wanted drug peddlers, Abdul Rosid, Mujjamil Haque and Zamal Ali.

In efforts to curb the drug menace, the government has stepped up in the war on drugs and has broken the spine of narco-terrorism and insurgency in several northeastern states. In Assam alone, Rs 407 crore of drugs have been seized in 2022.

Recently on April 19, during the inaugural event of the first National Conference of Anti-Narcotics Task Force, Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, announced that India would be drug-free by 2047. He emphasised ‘Team India’ and the ‘whole of Government approach’ will help India to escape from the menace of drugs.
