Guwahati: In a special operation conducted by the anti-drugs unit of the city police, a huge consignment of drugs was seized, and three wanted drug peddlers were arrested. The city police team busted a huge drugs consignment of 1.056 Kg of Heroin at the Nalapara area under the Basistha police station. The market value of this haul is approximately ₹8 crores, city police sources informed.

Three wanted drug traffickers, namely Abdul Rosid and Mujammil Haque, both from Barpeta district, and Md Zamal Ali of Kamrup district, were arrested. The police team, in the successful raid, was able to seize 88 soap boxes full of heroin, and two cars bearing registration numbers AS01ES0766 and AS01NC3769. It should be mentioned that Guwahati police seized drugs worth Rs 407 crore in 2022 as part of the ongoing war on drugs in the state. In 2021, Assam police seized more than Rs 700 crore worth of drugs. Psychotropic tablets accounted for over 200 crores of drugs caught in 2022.

Earlier on 13th February, city police seized a consignment of brown sugar weighing around 16.85 kilograms. As per rates in the international smuggling markets, the entire seizure was estimated to be worth around Rs 16.85 crores.

Drugs peddler Sahidur Rahman was arrested along with the consignment. During interrogation, Rahman revealed that he was transporting the consignment at the behest of notorious drug trafficker Ajak Khan.

It is worth mentioning that in the last 18 months, drugs and narcotic substances worth around Rs 1,066 crore have been seized by Assam police. 7,659 drug peddlers have been arrested in connection with drug trafficking in the state.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that this war will continue. The Government of Assam is on a relentless mission to make Assam drug-free, he added.
