A 20-year-old woman identified as Manorama Devi killed herself after stalker Mohammad Shamshad threatened her. Manorama who belongs to the Harijan jati was getting married to a man from her community the next month.

However, Shamshad never approved of the alliance, he barged into her house and tried to attack her. When one of her brothers went to register a police complaint he threatened of killing him as well, ultimately Manorama quit.

Both Manorama and Shamshad are residents of the Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.

Accused Shamshad has been booked under charges of abetment to suicide.

As per the FIR Shamshad was stalking the victim

A First Information Report (number–122/2023) was registered at the Sachendi police station of the Kanpur Nagar police station on April 4.

As per the complainant, the victim’s brother Dinesh Kamal, Shamshad used to follow and molest Manorama almost every single day. They talked to him and his family but nothing changed in Shamshad’s behaviour. He became even more arrogant.

He would say, “I will abduct Manorama”. The victim remained frightened.

On April 4, Dinesh went out for his work, his parents went to the field for their daily work while Manorama and the younger brother Sunny were at home. Around 3 in the evening, Shamshad barged into the house and started abusing Manorama.

Sunny rushed to the police station for registering a complaint against him. When Sunny reached the Sachendi police station, he received a call from his father who said that fearing Shamshad’s threat Manorama killed herself.

All the villagers have seen Shamshad getting out of the house.

The accused is a minor and hence, the further probe will be conducted considering that only.

As of now, he has been booked under IPC 306 (Abetment of Suicide).

Manorama was happy with her fiance

This correspondent called Dinesh Kamal, the victim’s brother on April 10. In a telephone conversation, he said, they live in the Surar village. They come from the Kori jati that falls under Harijan.

They are four brothers and sisters including Manorama. All of them were married except her.

The accused Shamshad lives in the Harkhu Purva village.

One of his sisters after marriage lives in Harkhu Purva village. Manorama often visited her and from there he started stalking her.

On the day of the suicide, he came to the house and assaulted Manorama. He was forcing her not to marry the man they finalised for her. Notably, she was happy with the alliance, on March 31, they had the ‘Roka’ ceremony.

Shamshad and his family were threatening the victim. He said he will get her parents and brothers killed. She feared his anger.

He managed to take her mobile number and would send her abusive things. She was petrified of even stepping out of the house.

Dinesh thought, warning Shamshad will work and he will stop stalking his sister but he never stopped. They did not want to take the name of their sister to the police station, he said.

Dinesh works as a mason. The man Manorama was getting married to was a tailor.

He said the accused should get punished. He may look like a kid but he ruined my sister’s life. His threats were no less than a grown-up man. He deserves to be treated as a major during the trials, said Dinesh.

The victim’s mother:

The unconscious woman in video is the mother of Manorama Devi (Harijan), who committed suicide on April 4.

Manorama was getting married to a Hindu boy next month, this angered stalker Mohd. Shamshad, as he began threatening her.
