CM Sarma said great men like Swami Vivekananda, Srimanta Sankardev, Lachit Borphukan should have been depicted adequately in the school curriculum.
Guwahati: Indian history books are biased because of the influence of the left-liberals. Those people who contributed to the greater Indian civilization and culture were not mentioned in the history books, said Assam chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma. He said there was not much mention about the great warrior Lachit Borphukan who defeated Mughals in the battle of Saraighat in the NCERT textbooks. Likewise, Shrimant Shankardev was a great proponent of 'Akhand Bharat' and introduced India's culture in Assam, and vis-visa, who introduced the Neo-Vaishnavite society, was never properly placed in the Indian history books, the CM said.
Participating in a book discussion on Veer Savarkar- The man who could have prevented partition written by Uday Mahurkar and Chirayu Pandit at ITA Machkhowa in Guwahati on Saturday (December 4), Dr. Sarma categorically mentioned that the culture of the nation was the same as there was no Muslim before Md. Ghauri and Babar in India. Those who embraced Islam four-five generations ago, their culture, food and prayers were Hindu before that. They should know that their religion might have changed, but still, the culture is the same, and it can't be changed.
Chief Minister Dr. Sarma said that Veer Savarkar was a great freedom fighter and patriot who rendered immense contribution to the freedom of India. The book throws untold facts on the great soul and helps the posterity to know about Veer Savarkar and his love for the motherland. The Chief Minister said Veer Savarkar had dreamt of a New India. He advocated equal dignity for everybody and opposed tooth and nail the partition of India. The Chief Minister said to expedite the nation's development, and one has to have a love for their country. A close look into the life and philosophy of Veer Savarkar gives an impression of his indelible love for the country and the countrymen.
Chief Minister Dr. Sarma also said, "There is an urgent need to make our younger generation aware of the culture and history of our country". He also said that after independence, the country's curriculum could not adequately reflect the works and philosophy of the great people of the nation.
