On 26th July, tension escalated in Assam -Mizoram border at Lailapur after Mizoram police and local miscreants killed six Assam police personnel in firing.
Guwahati: In a bid to de-escalate ongoing border tension after one week of the bloodiest standoff, both Assam and Mizoram chief ministers are talking about resolving it through dialogue. While the Mizoram government has said it would withdraw the FIR filed against Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Assam CM on Monday has directed the Police to withdraw the FIR against Mizoram Rajya Sabha MP Vanlalvena. Sources said these developments come after Union Home Minister Amit Shah had a telephonic discussion with Assam CM Dr Sarma and Mizoram CM Zoramthanga and directed both the chief ministers to find a peaceful resolution of the border differences.
Assam chief minister Dr Sarma said over Twitter, "What happened along the border on 26th July was unacceptable to the people of both the states. Our main focus is on keeping the spirit of the North-East alive. Hon'ble CM @ZoramthangaCM had promised to call me to post his quarantine. Border disputes can only be resolved through discussion."
He further tweets, "I have noted statements in the media by Hon'ble CM @ZoramthangaCM wherein he has expressed his desire to settle the border dispute amicably. Assam always wants to keep the spirit of North East alive. We are also committed to ensuring peace along our borders. To take this goodwill gesture ahead, I have directed @assampolice to withdraw FIR against K. Vanlalvena, Hon'ble MP, Rajya Sabha from Mizoram. However cases against other accused police officers will be pursued."
Taking to Twitter, Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga "In order to prevent any possible escalation of the situation, I request the people of Mizoram to avoid posting sensitive messages and make judicious use of their social media platform. I sincerely request all to stay calm and promote peace in this time of great difficulty.#Mizoram hopes for an amicable solution with the help of intervention from the Central Government."
On 26th July, tension escalated in Assam -Mizoram border at Lailapur after Mizoram police and local miscreants killed six Assam police personnel in firing. Following the incident, Assam police filed a case against 6 top officials of the neighbouring state. Simultaneously Mizo police also registered a case against 6 top officials of Assam. Later on, Assam police served a notice to Mizoram MP K Vanlalvenna for threatening Assam police in a television interview. The matter took an ugly turn when the Mizoram police registered a case against Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Finally, Union Home Minister Amit Shah intervened to de-escalate the ongoing tension between the two neighbouring states.
