Syed Issaq’s Library in Mysuru was Torched by Syed Nazir, Says Police

Syed Issaq’s library in Mysuru was burnt down to ashes early morning on April 9.

The news was widely shared on social media implying some religious angle to the burning. It was also suggested that it was a hate crime against poor Muslim.

The Mysuru Police Saturday arrested one Syed Nazir for the crime.

Police Commissioner Dr. Chandragupta told the press 35-year-old Syed Nazir threw a burning cigarette in the library which was housed in a hut. This caused fire which gutted the library.

Many news outlets put “Muslim man’s library” in the headline suggesting the incident has some religious angle.

Many social media influencers made the news go viral suggesting it was a hate crime.

A social media campaign was run to collect money to rebuild the library. The people donated about INR 30 lakh.

The library housed some 11000 books, including 3000 copies of Bhagwat Gita.
