In a shocking but welcome move, the Maharashtra state unit of DYFI, the youth wing of CPIM, was seen celebrating Jayanti of Shivaji Maharaj. The photos of the program were shared through the Facebook page of DYFI Maharashtra. Even though the netizens expressed the happiness of the youth wing of CPIM accepting Indian icons, some people asked the Maharashtra Unit of DYFI to teach their counterparts in Kerala about Shivaji Maharaj.
Some Facebook users questioned DYFI for celebrating Shivaji Jayanti in Maharashtra and hurling bad words at his legacy in Kerala. When some people even called the celebration a mere photo-opportunity, others predicted the appropriation of Veer Savarkar by DYFI in near future.
Following backlash from its own comrades, the state unit of Maharashtra later came up with an explanation for organising Shivaji Jayanti celebrations.
