Reports : Savarkar’s Plaque at Andamans

Foundation stone laying ceremony of Swatantrata Jyot for installation of Veer Savarkar Plaque was organised in the National Memorial Cellular Jail Andaman. Uttar Pradesh Governor Shri Ram Naik laid the foundation stone and performed bhoomipujan. He recalled the invaluable contribution of freedom fighters, who made supreme sacrifices to the cause of the motherland. He said selfless contribution of freedom fighters has made these Islands a place of pilgrimage and it is the bounden duty of every citizen of the country to visit these Islands at least once in their lifetime to pay their obeisance to the freedom fighters. The foundation laying of Swatantrata Jyot is a project of Indian Oil Foundation.

Uttar Pradesh Governor Shri Ram Naik paid rich tribute to noted saint Swami Kalyandev on his 11th death anniversary on July 14. Former Election Commissioner of India Shri GVG Krishnamurthy was also present on the occasion.
Recalling the contribution of Sant Swami Kalyandev Shri Naik said that he felt himself blessed by visiting the place where Swamiji spent his life for the welfare of the local people. He applauded the educational activities started by the Sant in the rural areas of Western Uttar Pradesh. “Swamiji dedicated his life for eradication of untouchability, promoting education and swadeshi and also strengthening the Indian culture,” he said.
Presiding over the function Dr GVG Krishnamurthy applauded the initiatives taken by the saint for promotion of education in the region. Swami Omananda Maharaj presented an statue of Shukratal Ashram and Gangajal to the Governor. Swami Kanak Prabhananda Maharaj said work is on at establishing Swami Kalyan Dev School of Medical Sciences and Research Centre in Meerut.                                       —Surender Singhal

Shri Naik described Veer Savarkar as Parasmani and a great son of the soil, who fought relentlessly for Independence. Referring to the incarceration of Veer Savarkar in Cellular Jail, he stated that Savarkar was confined to a solitary cell for 11 year, but the Britishers were not able to break his strong will power and the spirit of nationalism. He said Savarkar always thought for the country and how to liberate it from the shackles of the foreign regime. Shri Naik also termed the writings of Veer Savarkar as extraordinary because these came out at a time when he was subjected to severe tortures by the Britishers in the infamous Cellular Jail.
Shri Naik thanked Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh for their support to install Veer Savarkar Plaque. He urged the Administration to convert the Savarkar Gallery in Cellular Jail into a big museum so that everyone who visits the Museum can go through the life and history of Veer Savarkar and his invaluable contributions to our Freedom Struggle.
Lt. Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Lt. Gen AK Singh (Retd.) echoed the sentiments of Shri Ram Naik for declaring Andamans as a place and pilgrimage. Member of Parliament Shri Rahul Shewale sought support of Shri Ram Naik for reducing the airfare on Andaman sector so that people can visit National Memorial Cellular Jail to pay respect to the Freedom Fighters. He urged the Andaman & Nicobar Administration to consider re-building the Viper Island in view of the historical significance of the Island.                             –Dr Shakti Kumar Pandey
