KING Drupada, father of Draupadi could never see eye to eye with Acharya Drona. One day he invited two sages, Yaja and Upayaja to perform a yagna so that he could have a son who would kill his enemy, Acharya Drona.
After the yagna got over, everybody was offered prasada and so were the King Drupad and his wife. It so happened that at that moment, King Drupada’s wife was busy munching something in her mouth and the sages had to wait for her to finish eating before they could give her the prasada. Since it took her some time to finish it, both the sages became angry and threw the prasada in the yagna. All of a sudden, from the fire emerged a young warrior and a beautiful maiden.
A voice from heaven announced, “This young maiden has taken birth to become the cause for destroying all those who are evil.”
It was this young maiden who came to be called Draupadi after her father’s name and the warrior was called Dhrishtadyumna.
