At least 5071 security personnel and 16369 civilians have been killed by the terrorists in the Kashmir Valley.
According to the police statistics 5,071 security personnel were killed and 12,281 injured during the terrorists attacks across the Valley since 1989, after the youth took to guns in Kashmir. Giving break-up, the police statistics reveal that of the 5,071 dead security men, 3,637 belonged to army and para-military forces, 865 belonged to police, 442 were Special Police Officers (SPOs) and 127 were Village Defence Committee (VDC) members. The security personnel were killed in direct gunfights, grenade attacks and Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) blasts carried out by terrorists in length and breadth of the Valley. Police statistics further reveal that 12,281 security personnel were also injured in the attacks carried out by terrorists during past 18 years. Hundreds of injured security personnel have been maimed by the attacks.
Although the terrorist violence has come down in Kashmir, but security forces casualty figures in the first six months of 2007 has been on higher side. Security personnel suffered 31 deaths during the first six months last year, but this year, 44 soldiers were killed in different terrorist-related incidents in the trouble hit Valley.
The statistics further reveal that 16,369 civilians were killed in the incidents of firing, grenade explosions, landmine blasts and cross-firing incidents during the past 18 years. Of these 16,369 civilians, hundreds were killed by the unidentified gunmen and the cause of their death could not be known.
During the same period, 21,347 civilians were injured in the terrorism related incidents across the trouble hit Kashmir Valley.
The killing of civilians has been on lower side this year. The statistics reveal that civilian killings have fell from 144 during first six months last year to 53 during the same period this year. ?The number of abduction of civilians has also fallen from 44 to 17 during firs six months this year, and hanging has seen a decline from five to two during the same period.
