Thousands of teachers belonging to different parts of the country under the banner of All India Secondary Teachers? Federation (AISTF) and Akhil Bharatiya Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh (ABRMS), staged a massive demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on February 25 asking for introduction of quality education. Later a five-point memorandum was presented to the President of India demanding 6 per cent of the GDP to be spent on education and to stop commercialisation of education. The memorandum demanded III selection scale for all categories of teachers without any condition from January 1, 1996, as per the Fifth Pay Commission, no deputation of teachers for non-teaching work and reconstruction of education system on the basis of Indian values. The AISTF and ABRSM also presented over two lakh signatures to the President in support of their five-point demands.
