The tragic death of renowned Sanskrit scholar, journalist, writer and Rajya Sabha MP Prof. Vidyaniwas Mishra in a road accident in Mau district of Uttar Pradesh on February 14, has left the litterateurs of the country stunned. He was 74. He is survived by four sons and a daughter. The vehicle carrying Prof. Mishra from Azamgarh to Varanasi dashed against a tree when the driver tried to save a girl.
Prof. Mishra was cremated at Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi with full state honour on February 15. His younger brother Prof. Maheshwar Mishra lit the pyre. Besides leaders from all political parties, RSS Uttar Kshetra Pracharak Shri Dinesh Kumar and Vibhag Pracharak Shri Anil Kumar were present at the time of cremation.
RSS Akhil Bharatiya Prachar Pramukh Shri Adhish Kumar while paying tributes to Prof. Mishra said that he would be remembered as beacon light for new generation. Akhil Bharatiya Prakashan Vibhag Pramukh, Shri Shrikant Joshi, Kshetra Pracharak, Shri Ashok Beri, Uttar Kshetra Pracharak, Shri Dinesh Kumar also paid their tributes to him.
Born on January 14, 1925, in Gorakhpur, Prof. Mishra got his doctorate degree in 1964. He worked with Pandit Rahul Sankrityayan on Hindi-English dictionary from 1948 to 1950. He was Director Information in Uttar Pradesh government from 1950 to 1956 and reader in Gorakhpur University from 1956 to 1964. He was vice-chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth and Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwvidyalaya. He had also been editor of Navabharat Times, New Delhi, for several years.
