New Delhi: A 22-year-old Bangladeshi Muslim migrant identified in local social-media reports as Khan was arrested after a knife attack at the Baguio Villa residential estate in Hong Kong’s Southern District on August 10, in which a foreign domestic helper and a security guard were injured and hospitalised. The incident began at about 9am when the Khan reportedly left his unit in Block 47 wearing only sweatpants and moved towards Block 43, where he charged at a male passerby. The passerby narrowly escaped the attack, after which the suspect turned on a security guard.
Daylight attack at Baguio villa
According to reports, Khan was bare-chested and barefoot when he emerged from his residence. Outside Block 43, he approached a male passerby and attempted to attack him with a knife. The man managed to dodge the assault. The suspect then confronted a security guard, leading to a physical struggle.
Other security personnel rushed to the scene as the confrontation developed. Khan subsequently fled from the clash and attacked a passing foreign domestic helper, stabbing the person in the back. Posts circulating on X claimed that the victim, described as a domestic helper, was stabbed in the neck and back with a fruit knife. The claim regarding the weapon and the victim’s injuries has circulated online alongside reports of the arrest.

Security guards and passersby eventually intervened and restrained Khan before police officers arrived. The Bangladeshi migrant was arrested at the scene. Both the injured domestic helper and the security guard were taken to hospital for treatment.
The sequence of events has drawn particular attention because the attacker appeared to move between unrelated targets. The initial passerby, the security guard and the domestic helper were targeted during a short period, turning a residential estate into the scene of a rapidly unfolding knife Jihad.
Injured cat found inside suspect’s flat
Police searched the Khan’s home following his arrest and found a pet cat with an injured right ear. The animal was subsequently handed over to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for treatment. Reports have suggested that the cat may have been injured before the suspect left his flat. The discovery has added another disturbing element to the investigation into the events at Baguio Villa.
Khan was described in reports as a resident of the estate. Malaysian newspaper The Star reported that two people were hospitalised after a man was arrested on suspicion of a random knife attack at the luxury residential development. The report described the attacker as a 22-year-old resident. However, the social-media posts identified the suspect as a Bangladeshi man named Khan and alleged that he had attacked the domestic helper and grazed the security guard with a fruit knife.
Knife attacks and Islamic State propaganda
The incident has also prompted renewed discussion about the use of knives in attacks inspired by extremist propaganda. Islamic State propaganda has previously encouraged supporters to carry out attacks using readily available weapons when firearms or explosives were unavailable.
In September 2014, an Islamic State message called on supporters to attack perceived enemies and specifically encouraged attacks using knives, vehicles and other easily accessible means. The propaganda urged supporters to target police, security personnel and people described by the organisation as enemies or non-believers. Such messaging became associated with a wider strategy of encouraging individuals to conduct low-tech attacks without requiring direct operational assistance from an organised terrorist cell. The reference is significant in the context of the Hong Kong attack because a security guard was among those injured and a knife was used.
Online commentary has also cited Qur’an 47:4, including the translated phrase, “When you meet the unbelievers, strike the necks.”

The Hong Kong investigation will therefore be crucial in determining whether the assault was an apparently random act of violence or whether there was an ideological component. Police will need to establish the suspect’s background, communications, online activity, possible extremist contacts and the circumstances preceding the attack.
The attack has nevertheless raised fresh concerns over the ease with which a lone individual can turn an ordinary residential environment into the scene of sudden violence using a readily available weapon. The investigation into Khan’s motive is now central to determining whether the Baguio Villa stabbing was an isolated criminal act or part of a wider ideological pattern.
