The proposal to rename Jalalabad had been pending for some time and was supported by local public representatives and various social organisations. According to the state government, the new name, Parshuram Nagar, reflects the region’s cultural heritage and honours Bhagwan Parshuram, one of the revered figures in Hindu tradition believed to be the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
Cabinet Clears Renaming Proposal
The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approved the proposal to rename Jalalabad in Shahjahanpur district as Parshuram Nagar. The government said the change is intended to better reflect the region’s cultural heritage, historical significance and public sentiment.
Officials said the proposal was examined by the concerned departments before receiving Cabinet approval. Following the necessary government notification, the new name will be updated in official records, administrative documents, maps and public signboards.
Why Jalalabad is Being Renamed
The demand to rename Jalalabad has been raised by local groups for several years. Supporters argued that the existing name reflected the medieval period, while the proposed name would honour Bhagwan Parshuram, who is widely worshipped across northern India, especially among the Brahmin community. State government sources said the change aims to preserve the region’s cultural identity and recognise historical traditions associated with the area.
Since coming to power in 2017, the Yogi Adityanath-led government has renamed several cities, railway stations and public places across Uttar Pradesh. Some of the prominent examples include:
* Allahabad renamed as Prayagraj
* Faizabad renamed as Ayodhya
* Mughalsarai railway junction renamed as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction
The government has consistently maintained that these renamings are meant to restore historical identities and recognise India’s cultural and civilisational heritage.
Following the cabinet approval, the state government will issue formal notifications to implement the new names. Various departments, including revenue, transport, postal services and local administration, will update official records accordingly. Once the process is completed, Jalalabad in Shahjahanpur district will officially be known as Parshuram Nagar, becoming the latest addition to Uttar Pradesh’s growing list of renamed towns and public places.
