OTTAWA: A massive fire broke out at the Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta on October 17, Saturday(local time), leaving several people dead and dozens injured. Canadian Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed fatalities and injuries but did not disclose the exact casualty figures or the cause of the blaze. The incident triggered an emergency response involving federal, provincial and local authorities, while hospitals in the region struggled to manage the influx of patients.

Major fire at CFB military base triggers emergency response

The fire erupted at CFB Wainwright, a major Canadian military training installation in eastern Alberta. The blaze spread rapidly amid strong winds and reportedly crossed the military base’s perimeter fence, prompting firefighters from multiple jurisdictions to respond. Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed the casualties in a statement, saying, “I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base”.

AS per several media sources, atleast seven people had been killed and dozens more injured. However, authorities had not independently confirmed these figures and the Canadian Armed Forces said specific casualty numbers would not be released until the next of kin of those affected had been informed. Defence Minister McGuinty described the situation as “very, very active and delicate”, emphasising that officials were still working to establish what had happened. He also said that he could not recall a similar incident in recent memory.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) joined the response and investigation. According to reports, the Wainwright RCMP received a call for assistance at around 4PM local time on Saturday.

Cause of the blaze remains unclear

Authorities have yet to establish the cause of the fire or disclose the full extent of the damage. Global News reported, citing unnamed military sources, that the incident may have involved a gas line or gas well being struck during a live-fire training exercise.

The Municipal District of Wainwright said that the fire spread rapidly because of high winds after crossing the base’s fence. The region reportedly experienced wind gusts of up to 100 kilometres per hour, complicating firefighting operations.

Late Saturday night, the municipal district reported that the fire was being held at that time, although firefighting crews would continue monitoring the area. Despite the scale of the incident, no evacuation order had been issued. Local authorities urged residents to avoid the affected area, follow emergency instructions and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles.

Residents were also advised to avoid visiting the Wainwright Health Centre unless they required critical medical attention, as emergency services concentrated on treating those affected.

Hospitals overwhelmed as high number of patients arrive

The fire placed considerable pressure on healthcare facilities in Alberta, with a large number of patients reportedly requiring medical attention. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton declared a “code orange”, an emergency protocol activated to prepare for an unusually high number of patients.

Emergency department physician said that the number of patients threatened to overwhelm healthcare facilities in the region. Describing the scale of the emergency, he said, “It’s a disaster. It’s a one in every 15 to 25-year disaster”.

Healthcare facilities in Wainwright were reportedly overwhelmed, prompting the diversion of patients to hospitals across Edmonton. The response highlighted the intensity of catastrophe. Local healthcare providers and emergency services worked to manage the influx of patients, while further details about the number and condition of those affected remained unavailable.

PM Carney, Alberta Premier express condolences

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged the incident in a social media post, describing it as a “serious incident creating a major fire” at CFB Wainwright military base. “Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected”, Carney said, adding that the federal government was working closely with Alberta officials and local authorities.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the fire as “significant and tragic”, saying it was affecting many military personnel. She also thanked first responders and those providing care and support to the affected individuals. McGuinty said that the Canadian Armed Forces, alongside federal, provincial and local authorities, were coordinating efforts to mobilise the necessary assistance and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Support was also offered by neighbouring provinces. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said that resources had been deployed to Alberta, adding that his province was prepared to provide further assistance if required. British Columbia Premier David Eby said that his government had offered all possible assistance.

CFB Wainwright: Canada’s premier strategic military facility

CFB Wainwright is one of Canada’s major military training bases and an important facility for preparing soldiers for combat operations and operational deployments. The installation houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which conducts large-scale, realistic battlefield exercises and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, which provides military training. It also serves as a training ground for army field force units based in Edmonton. The base typically has around 690 military personnel and 300 civilian workers on-site on a given day.
