On Navratri 2026 Day 7, October 17, we worship Maa Kalaratri. She is one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. We seek her blessings for courage, strength and protection. According to Hindu mythology, Maa Kalaratri fought the demon Raktabija, who had a strange power: every drop of his blood that fell to the ground gave birth to another demon. To stop him, Maa Kalaratri made sure his blood did not touch the ground and finally defeated him. Maa Kalaratri’s story reminds us that life sometimes puts us in situations where we feel scared, helpless, or unsure of what to do. At such times, running away may seem easier, but facing our fears takes real courage. Though her appearance may seem frightening at first sight, her purpose is to protect those who seek her blessings.

In everyday life, fear often stops us from doing what we know is right. We hesitate to speak up against injustice, remain quiet even when we see unfair treatment. Maa Kalaratri reminds us that courage does not mean never feeling afraid. It means not allowing fear to control our actions. Her story teaches us that sometimes, the fiercest power is the one that protects us when we feel the most vulnerable.

Origin of Maa Kalaratri’s Name

According to Hindu traditions, Maa Kalaratri is the fierce form of Goddess Durga. Her name is formed from two Sanskrit words: Kaal, which means time and destruction, and Ratri, which means night. Her name is commonly interpreted as the one who brings an end to darkness and destructive forces.

Despite her fearsome appearance, Maa Kalaratri is also known as Shubhankari, meaning the one who brings auspiciousness and does good.

Appearance: Maa Kalaratri is shown with a dark complexion, three eyes and untidy hair. She rides a donkey and carries a sword and an iron hook, while her other two hands bless and protect her devotees. Her appearance shows the courage to face evil without any form of fear.

Devotees can chant the following mantra while worshipping Maa Kalaratri:

ॐ देवी कालरात्र्यै नमः॥

Om Devi Kalaratryai Namah.

To seek Maa Kalaratri’s blessings for courage, protection and freedom from fear, devotees can chant this mantra with faith and devotion.

Navratri Day 7 Colour 2026

Grey is the commonly followed colour for the seventh day of Navratri 2026. The colour is associated with balance, stability and a calm approach to difficult situations. Devotees who like to follow the day-wise colour tradition can wear grey clothes or include the colour in their puja arrangements. However, Navratri colour traditions can vary by region and family custom.

Maa Kalaratri Bhog: What is Offered to the Goddess?

Jaggery, commonly known as gur, is traditionally offered to Maa Kalaratri as bhog. Devotees may also offer sweets made with jaggery, fruits and other vegetarian preparations according to their family and regional traditions. After the puja, the offerings are distributed as prasad.

What Maa Kalaratri Teaches Us in Today’s World

The fears we face are not always related to physical danger. Sometimes, we fear speaking the truth because we do not want to upset others. Sometimes, we remain silent when we witness unfair behaviour because standing up may come at a personal cost. At other times, fear of failure prevents us from taking the first step towards something meaningful. Courage is not the absence of fear. It is our ability to act wisely even when we feel afraid.

Her story also reminds us to look within ourselves and recognise our own shortcomings. Feelings like anger, jealousy and ego can sometimes affect our decisions and the way we treat others. Worshipping Maa Kalaratri allows us to recognise these feelings and make an effort to overcome them.

As mentioned above, Maa Kalaratri is also known as Shubhankari, the Goddess who brings goodness and protection. She reminds us that being strong doesn’t mean we should make others feel weak or prove that we are better than them. True strength is about helping those in need, standing up against injustice and doing what is right, even when it seems difficult.

This Navratri 2026, Maa Kalaratri teaches us that fear may be a part of life, but it should not decide the direction of our lives. Sometimes, the first step towards overcoming darkness is simply finding the courage to face it.
