In India’s history, certain personalities live on far beyond their achievements and become an eternal source of inspiration for generations to come. Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was one such great personality. He turned science into a source of national strength, saw education as a means of social change, and showed through his conduct that true greatness rises far above the boundaries of caste, religion, language, and social discrimination.

Remembering Dr Kalam on his birth anniversary on October 15 is not merely a tribute to a great scientist; it is also an effort to revive an ideal in which knowledge, action, humility, spirituality, and service to the nation complement one another.

From an ordinary family to extraordinary service to the Nation

Born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Abul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam’s life was an inspiring story of struggle, discipline, and determination. Though he was born into an ordinary family, he never let his circumstances limit his dreams. His dedication to education, continuous hard work, and scientific outlook earned him a place among the country’s leading scientists.

He played an important role in developing India’s space research and defence technology. Because of his contributions to India’s missile programme, he became known as the “Missile Man of India.” He became the 11th President of India and served as the country’s highest constitutional authority from 2002 to 2007.

Yet his greatest achievement was not merely developing scientific technology or arriving at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

His real achievement was inspiring millions of Indians, especially young people, to believe that, regardless of their circumstances, they could contribute meaningfully to nation-building through knowledge, hard work, and determination.

A message of humanity beyond caste and religion

Dr Kalam’s life represented India’s inclusive tradition, where a person is defined not by birth or religious background, but by actions, character, and contribution.

Throughout his life, he respected diverse religious and spiritual traditions. His personality conveyed the message that India’s strength lies in its diversity. People of different faiths and traditions can live together and contribute to the nation’s development.

For him, the nation was supreme. He encouraged young people to dream big, work honestly, and become partners in solving the country’s problems.

At a time when society needs to rise above caste-based narrowness, religious divisions, and mutual distrust, Dr Kalam’s life reminds us that a nation’s true strength lies in the knowledge, character, unity, and social harmony of its citizens.

Inspiration from the Bhagavad Gita and the path of Karma Yoga

A notable aspect of Dr Kalam’s personality was his spiritual curiosity and his respect for various religious traditions. To understand his life and ideas, it helps to consider Indian philosophy, particularly Karma Yoga.

The Bhagavad Gita’s central message is that a person should perform their duty with dedication, devotion, and selflessness. A famous verse from the Gita states:

Karmanye vadhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachana
Ma karma-phala-hetur bhur ma te sango ’stv akarmani

This means that a person has a right to perform their duty, but not to the fruits of their actions. One should not make the results of action the sole objective, nor become attached to inaction.

This verse inspires dedication to duty in fields such as scientific research, education, administration, and national service. Dr Kalam’s life also exemplified hard work, discipline, and commitment to his responsibilities.

Linking the Gita’s Karma Yoga to Kalam’s values is an interpretation of his personality. Rather than confining his life to a single religious identity, it is more appropriate to understand his broad spiritual outlook and human values.

His life reinforces the idea that knowledge has no narrow boundaries. Science gives us the power to understand nature’s mysteries, while philosophy inspires us to reflect on duty, morality, and the purpose of life. When scientific thinking and moral awareness move together, development becomes more humane and meaningful.

The harmony of science and spirituality

Dr Kalam’s distinctive quality was that he did not regard modern science and spiritual thought as contradictory. He supported scientific research, technological self-reliance, and innovation. At the same time, he also valued human sensitivity, morality, and inner discipline.

In India’s ancient knowledge tradition, knowledge has been regarded not merely as a means of personal achievement, but as an instrument for the welfare of society. In keeping with this spirit, Dr Kalam wanted science to be used to improve human life, make the country self-reliant, and solve social problems.

Young people held a particularly important place in his vision. He believed the country’s future depended on the imagination, scientific awareness, morality, and capabilities of its students.

His life teaches us that spirituality is not limited to rituals or forms of worship. Truthfulness, self-discipline, altruism, a sense of duty, and sensitivity toward humanity also give life a higher purpose.

From Rashtrapati Bhavan to the hearts of students

Dr Kalam transformed the presidency into a platform for public engagement and youth inspiration. Even after becoming President, interacting with students remained one of his favourite activities.

He visited schools and universities across the country and spoke with young people. He encouraged them not merely to aim for jobs, but to acquire knowledge, seek solutions to problems, and contribute to the nation’s development.

His book Wings of Fire brought widespread recognition to his struggles and scientific journey. In Ignited Minds, he expressed his faith in young people’s potential and his hope for India’s future.

On July 27, 2015, he passed away while addressing students at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong. Remaining among students until the final moments of his life became one of the most poignant features of his personality.

He was President by position, but remained a teacher at heart. He believed that with the right direction, opportunities, and inspiration, students could play a decisive role in solving the country’s problems.
Dr Kalam’s message for today’s generation

The most meaningful way to remember Dr Kalam on his birth anniversary is to put his ideas into practice.

Today, India must continue to advance in scientific research, modern technology, quality education, environmental protection, social harmony, and self-reliance. Achieving these goals requires citizens who value social responsibility alongside personal success.

Young people can draw three major lessons from his life.

  • First, no matter how challenging the circumstances, one should never stop striving to move forward through education and hard work.
  • Second, knowledge is not merely for personal recognition, but also for serving society and the nation.
  • Third, while respecting one’s faith and cultural identity, one should also maintain goodwill toward other ideas, traditions, and communities.

This outlook can become the foundation of a harmonious, confident, and developed India.

One Life, Many Inspirations

Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s life was an inspiring confluence of scientific achievement, spiritual curiosity, simplicity, discipline, and service to the nation. He showed that a high position does not make a person great; greatness comes from one’s thoughts, actions, and contribution to society.

His life conveys the message that India’s diverse religious and cultural traditions can engage with one another through shared values such as humanity, duty, and harmony. Whether it is the Karma Yoga of the Bhagavad Gita or a scientist’s dedication to the pursuit of knowledge, performing one’s duty sincerely and using knowledge for the welfare of all make life meaningful.

Dr Kalam is no longer among us, but his dreams, ideas, and inspiration live on. The truest tribute to him would be to rise above caste and narrow discrimination and make knowledge, hard work, morality, and national interest the foundation of our lives.

Dr Kalam’s life teaches us that dreams become meaningful when they inspire us to do something not only for ourselves, but for the entire nation.
