Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a day-long visit to Tamil Nadu on October 11, visited the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre on the IIT Madras campus on October 11. Experts at the institute briefed Prime Minister Modi on the centre’s functions and research.

Prime Minister Modi was received at Chennai Airport by Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.

At the IIT Madras campus, Prime Minister Modi performed pooja at the Jalakandeswarar Temple before visiting the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre.

Launched in 2022 by IIT Madras, the centre is part of an ambitious global project to map the human brain at cellular and connectivity levels, with a focus on high-resolution brain imaging.

PM Modi dedicated the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras to the nation.

He also launched its pioneering global scientific mission to map more than 100 human brains into three-dimensional atlases at cellular resolution across the human lifespan, from the foetal stage to old age. He also released C-STROKE, a one-of-its-kind human ischaemic stroke atlas. Featuring more than 1,000 annotated microscopic sections from a stroke-affected brain, the atlas will help researchers worldwide identify novel therapeutic targets.

AT the premiere institute, PM Modi inaugurated the IITM–Maestro Ilaiyaraaja Centre for Music Learning and Research on the IIT Madras campus.

The dedicated music research and learning facility was established in collaboration with music maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s music company, following the laying of its foundation stone in 2024. It has been conceived to bring music learning and research together with technology.
