NEW DELHI: A key eyewitness in the murder case of 26-year-old Tarun Kumar was reportedly attacked and threatened on September 28, Monday with the incident triggering tension in the area and prompting the deployment of additional police personnel. The victim’s family has said that the assault was intended to intimidate the witness, defy them from telling the truth and influence proceedings before the Juvenile Justice Board. The attackers demanded the family to stay away from the case, if not threatened of face serious consequences.

Tarun’s uncle attacked near his home
Tek Chand, Tarun Kumar’s uncle and an important witness in the case, was surrounded and assaulted by the persons, who are linked to the individuals accused in the murder case. According to his account, the attack took place at around 10:30PM near the deceased’s residence.
Tek Chand said that the attackers assaulted him repeatedly, striking his face, chest and other parts of his body until he lost consciousness. He was subsequently taken to a hospital by the police personnel for treatment.
According to reports, the attackers warned him to stay away from the case and threatened his family with serious consequences. Tek Chand further said that he was asked to withdraw his statements, particularly ahead of an upcoming proceeding before the Juvenile Justice Board.
Among those named in connection with the aassault is a man identified as Golu and his servant. Golu’s brother, Irfan alias Bunty, had earlier been arrested in connection with Tarun Kumar’s murder case. The exact roles of those involved in the latest incident are being investigated by police.
Threats linked to upcoming hearing
The attack assumes significance as the Juvenile Justice Board is currently considering the question of the primary accused’s age in the murder case. The proceedings are aimed at determining whether the accused was a juvenile at the time of the offence. According to the reports cited by the family, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) has invalidated a birth certificate from 2011 that had been presented to support the claim that the accused was a minor.
With the age dispute pending before the Board, Tek Chand has said that the attackers specifically referred to the proceedings and pressured him to withdraw his testimony. The family has expressed concern that an assault on an eyewitness could affect both the investigation and the evidence being presented in the case.
Victim’s family seeks protection and immediate arrests
The latest incident has renewed concerns over the safety of Tarun Kumar’s family and witnesses. The family has said that no police personnel were present to protect them when Tek Chand was attacked and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible. They have also sought police protection, citing the threats against the family.
Prosecution counsel Sumit Chauhan has reportedly pressed for security to be provided to the family in accordance with earlier court directions. The demand comes amid concerns that further intimidation could affect witnesses or proceedings in the murder case.
Following the assault, additional police personnel were deployed in the area as a precautionary measure to prevent any further escalation of tension. Police are also examining CCTV footage from cameras installed near the location of the incident to identify and establish the roles of those involved in the assault.
Tarun Kumar was killed during Holi celebrations
Tarun Kumar, 26, was killed on March 4, during Holi celebrations in Delhi. According to accounts cited by the police and his family, an 11-year-old girl from Tarun’s family was playing Holi on the terrace of their home when she threw a water balloon intended for her father.
The balloon landed on the road and splashed water on a Muslim woman from the neighbourhood, resulting in an argument between the two households. The family said that the girl and her relatives apologised and that the dispute appeared to have ended. However, tensions resurfaced later in the evening when Tarun returned on his motorcycle after celebrating Holi with a friend.
According to police, Tarun was stopped by a group of around 15–20 people and attacked with iron rods, bricks, stones and other objects. Family members and others who attempted to intervene were also assaulted. Tarun was subsequently taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
