September 17 is not merely a historic date marking Hyderabad’s Liberation, but a reminder of the journey of nation-building and the values that continue to bind Bharat together, said Vice-President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan in Hyderabad.
He participated as the Chief Guest at the 79th Hyderabad Liberation Day celebrations held at Parade Ground, Secunderabad, Telangana.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-President said that 17 September 1948 marked the conclusion of a decisive chapter in the history of independent Bharat, with the integration of the erstwhile Hyderabad State into the Indian Union following the events of September 1948 and Operation Polo. He said that Hyderabad Liberation Day is not merely a commemoration of a historic date, but a reminder of the journey of nation-building and the values that continue to bind Bharat together.
He said the story of Hyderabad reflects the enormous challenges faced by a young nation in bringing together people who had emerged from different political circumstances. It was a story of statesmanship, courage and sacrifice, followed by the larger and continuing task of building a constitutional democracy in which every citizen has an equal place.

Recalling Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s contribution to national integration, the Vice-President said that as the first Home Minister and Minister for States, Sardar Patel carried an extraordinary responsibility at a time when India was recovering from Partition and simultaneously consolidating hundreds of princely states into one Union. “Sardar Patel Ji laid the steely foundation of a strong, unified Ek Bharat,” C. P. Radhakrishnan said.
Drawing a parallel between different phases of India’s nation-building, the Vice-President said: “Gandhi Ji and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Ji played a pivotal role in India’s freedom. Sardar Patel Ji played a pivotal role in unifying princely states with modern-day India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji is now playing a pivotal role in the making of developed India – Viksit Bharat @ 2047.”
Paying tribute to the people’s movement behind the Hyderabad struggle, C. P. Radhakrishnan said that students, intellectuals, writers, social workers, political activists, farmers and ordinary citizens participated in the struggle and endured imprisonment, violence and immense personal hardship.
He paid homage to patriots including Ramji Gond, Turrebaz Khan and Komaram Bheem, among many others, and said their courage reminds us that history is not made only in government offices or by famous statesmen, but also by ordinary citizens who refuse to accept injustice as their destiny.
“Political integration can bring territories together; constitutional democracy brings citizens together,” he said, stressing that national unity cannot be sustained by geography alone and must be strengthened through equal rights, equal dignity and equal opportunity.
He said Bharat’s unity does not require every citizen to be identical, noting that Indians may speak different languages, follow different traditions, worship differently and hold different political opinions, yet remain bound together by the Constitution and the principle that sovereignty ultimately belongs to the people.
Referring to the role of the Central Armed Police Forces, the Vice-President said that they had played an important role in the integration of princely states and in safeguarding the territorial integrity of Bharat in 1947–48. He also acknowledged their contribution in combating Left-Wing Extremism in Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and other affected areas.
The Vice-President visited the War Memorial and laid a wreath, paying tributes to the bravehearts.
He also inspected the parade and witnessed the impressive March Past and evocative cultural performances at the event. He said the legacy of Hyderabad must remind the nation that integration must lead to inclusion, and patriotism must ultimately find its highest expression in service to the nation.
Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, speaking on the occasion, said, “Today’s day gives us the opportunity to draw inspiration from the sacrifices, struggles, and dedication of those immortal warriors and people’s heroes who devoted themselves to the nation in India’s freedom struggle and the Hyderabad liberation struggle.”
Union Minister for Coal and Mines Kishan Reddy paid rich tributes to the martyrs and freedom fighters who fought against the autocratic rule of the Nizam and the brutal massacres carried out by the Razakars.
He strongly criticised the Congress and BRS parties, saying that, just as the atrocities of the Nazis in Germany are remembered even today as a warning to future generations, the atrocities and genocide carried out by the Nizam and the Razakars, attacks on temples, and the sufferings of the people have been suppressed for many years for vote-bank politics and out of fear of the Majlis party.
He condemned the practice of covering up the Nizam’s rule and the atrocities of the Razakars and said it was painful that the Nizam was praised as a great man in the Assembly itself.
Kishan Reddy issued a strong challenge to those in power who praise the Nizam, saying that he was a good ruler and provided excellent governance.

“If the Nizam’s rule was so great, why did so many great personalities such as Vande Mataram Ramachandra Rao, Bhagya Reddy Varma, Komaram Bheem, Chakali Ailamma, Doddi Komuraiah and P. V. Narasimha Rao have to fight against the Nizam’s oppression?
“Why did people in rural areas have to build bastions in their villages for protection from the atrocities of the Razakars? Why did a situation arise in independent India in which the Indian Army had to wage war against the Nizam with tanks?”
