NEW DELHI: Neem Karoli Baba, lovingly known among his followers as Maharaj-ji, was a revered Hindu pandit and devoted follower of Hanuman ji whose simple approach to spirituality continues to influence people in India and across the world. Known for his emphasis on love, seva, compassion and remembrance of Bhagwan, he became one of the most widely remembered spiritual figures of the 20th century.
Neem Karoli Baba was born as Lakshman Narayan Sharma around 1900 in Akbarpur in Uttar Pradesh. According to accounts of his life, he left home at a young age and travelled as a wandering sadhu before eventually returning to family life at his father’s request.
Over the years, he came to be known as Neem Karoli Baba and attracted devotees through his devotion, simplicity and emphasis on serving others. Unlike teachers who relied on elaborate philosophical explanations, Maharaj-ji was remembered for conveying spiritual ideas through simple instructions and everyday acts.
His devotion to Hanuman ji was central to his spiritual life. The Kainchi Dham near Nainital, one of the most important places associated with him, became a major centre of devotion. One of the most important figures in spreading his teachings in the West was Ram Dass, formerly Harvard professor Richard Alpert, who met Neem Karoli Baba in India in 1967. Neem Karoli Baba passed away on September 11, 1973, in Vrindavan. His death anniversary is observed today, September 11, 2026, marking 53 years since his passing. More than five decades later, his teachings continue to appeal to people facing uncertainty, disappointment and difficult phases of life.

Through Ram Dass’s books, talks and teachings, Maharaj-ji’s message reached generations of spiritual seekers outside India. Yet the central ideas remained remarkably uncomplicated. Love people. Serve others. Remember Bhagwan. Be truthful. Do not allow difficult circumstances to destroy compassion.
Neem Karoli Baba died more than five decades ago, but the questions faced by people today remain familiar: how to deal with disappointment, how to respond to people who hurt us, how to live with uncertainty and how to remain compassionate during difficult times. That is perhaps why Maharaj-ji’s teachings continue to resonate. His spiritual message did not promise a life without suffering. Instead, it offered a way of responding to suffering without losing faith, compassion or humanity.
