FACT CHECK: Indonesian Jaranan video falsely shared as Congress supporter abducted in Ladakh by RSS Swayamsevaks

A video originally from Indonesia is being shared widely on social media in India. The claims associated with the video are that a Congress supporter is being abducted by RSS Swayamsevaks on the instructions of BJP leader Vinay Kumar. On the contrary, the video is originally a traditional Javanese Jaranan dance performance, not an abduction in Ladakh

Indonesian Jaranan Dance Video Falsely Shared as Congress Supporter Being Abducted in Ladakh

Since September 4, a video is making rounds on social media with bizarre claims. It is been alleged that the video features a Congress supporter from Ladakh who is being abducted from her home. In the said abduction, the accused are claimed to be RSS Swayamsevaks, who are allegedly doing this on the instructions or BJP leader Vinay Kumar.

The video was shared widely with this claim, not just by the Congress supporters but other social media handles as well.

When checked thoroughly, the claims associated with the video turned out to be false.

Notably, the viral video does not show an abduction in Ladakh, instead it is a recording of a traditional Jaranan performance from Indonesia. This art form is also called as Kuda Lumping, Jaran Kepang or Jathilan.

The play in video is being falsely presented as an abduction.

There is no credible report of any such abduction confirming that a Congress supporter was abducted in Ladakh, on the instructions of Vinay Kumar by Swayamsevaks.

What does the viral video actually show?

As soon as the screenshot of the video is searched in reverse analysing the key frames of the viral video, it turns out that the same video was uploaded on August 29, 2026 on Instagram by an account name tubagusjakaa. The caption accompanying the video reads “Mendem Jaranan” and includes hashtags such as #jaranan, #mendemjaranan, #kerasukan, #mbekes, #kudalumping and #jatilan.

The visuals in the video match the characteristics of a Jaranan performance, a traditional Javanese dance form from Indonesia.

Jaranan performances commonly involve dancers using flat horse shaped props made from woven bamboo. The performances may also include traditional music and, in some forms trance or altered states, during which performers can behave unusually or appear to lose control of their movements.

Therefore, what may appear unusual or disturbing when viewed without context is actually part of a traditional cultural performance.

Original uploader posted similar videos

The Instagram account that uploaded the video has also shared other clips showing people participating in similar Jaranan performances. This further establishes that the viral footage is connected to a traditional Indonesian cultural performance, rather than an incident involving a political worker in Ladakh.

The viral claim is hence a FALSE. The video does not show a Congress supporter being abducted in Ladakh by RSS Swayamsevaks. It is actually footage of a Jaranan, Kuda Lumping traditional dance performance from Indonesia, which has been taken out of context and falsely linked to RSS and is defaming Swayamsevaks.
