KOLKATA: The Nationalist Students’ Front (NSF), Jadavpur University, has submitted a strongly worded representation to the West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s Office, Kolkata Police, the state Director General of Police, Jadavpur University authorities and other concerned institutions, alleging the spread of secessionist propaganda, campus violence, intimidation and the deterioration of the academic environment at the university.
In its letter, the student organisation described Jadavpur University as a campus where ideological clashes and political activity have increasingly overshadowed academic concerns. The NSF alleged that sections of radical left student groups have created an atmosphere of intimidation and claimed that ordinary students who do not subscribe to their political ideology are being forced to study in an atmosphere of fear.
One of the central issues raised in the representation is the alleged presence of slogans and graffiti including “Kashmir Mange Azadi,” “Azad Kashmir,” “Free Kashmir” and “Free Gorkhaland.” The organisation also referred to “Free Palestine” slogans and graffiti concerning the demolition of the Babri Masjid.
The NSF alleged that such material goes beyond routine political expression and claimed that slogans questioning India’s territorial integrity require investigation by law-enforcement authorities.
The organisation has urged the police and university administration to identify those responsible for such graffiti and examine whether any laws have been violated.
The letter also highlighted alleged incidents of violence on campus, including incidents that the NSF says occurred during the night of August 19–20, 2026. It alleged that violence, burning of materials, physical assaults and intimidation have become recurring features of campus political confrontations.
The organisation said it does not support counter-violence and maintained that disputes between competing student groups must be dealt with through the rule of law and institutional mechanisms.
The NSF also referred to a complaint allegedly filed by its member Parth Pariwandh in October 2025, claiming that he received violent and threatening messages containing hate-filled references to Biharis and threats of extreme physical harm.
The organisation has presented the incident as part of what it describes as a wider pattern of intolerance on campus and has called for protection of students irrespective of their political or ideological affiliations.
Beyond political disputes, the NSF’s representation raised a series of academic concerns. The organisation claimed to have submitted representations seeking reforms relating to timely publication of results, review mechanisms, supplementary examinations, removal of punitive year-lag provisions and access to evaluated answer scripts under RTI provisions.
The group also said it had filed RTI applications concerning the functioning and financial accounts of student representatives, including questions surrounding the status of unelected student union signatories.
According to the NSF, academic grievances should not be overshadowed by political conflicts and students must be able to pursue their education without institutional or ideological pressure.
The student organisation has called for an immediate investigation into alleged anti-national and secessionist graffiti, stronger enforcement of campus-security measures, adequate CCTV coverage and prevention of unauthorised outsiders from entering the university for political violence.
It has also demanded protection for students from different ideological backgrounds and called for transparent and time-bound academic reforms. The NSF further urged authorities to address what it described as the selective tolerance of hate directed at Hindu cultural and religious symbols.
In its representation, the NSF argued that Jadavpur University is a public institution and should remain a place for education, research and intellectual debate rather than becoming a battleground for political confrontation.
The organisation said it was prepared to submit photographs of graffiti and posters, timelines of alleged incidents, copies of earlier complaints and RTI applications to the authorities.
