UJJAIN: Where science accepts its limitations as the ultimate truth, an infinite world of spirituality and faith begins, a world that people often describe as a ‘miracle’. In Avantika, the ancient city of Baba Mahakal, Ujjain, an extraordinary, inexplicable and astonishing spectacle has come alive these days between Kanthal Square and Chhatri Chowk. It has left modern engineering, giant cranes, Poklen machines and administrative authority seemingly helpless.
Ten days have now passed in repeated attempts to relocate the sacred Khade Hanuman ji’s murti, yet Hanuman Ji remains firmly standing in the very same place, as though immersed in devotion to his revered Bhagwan Shri Ram. Under the preparations for Simhastha 2028, the administration deployed its full strength to remove the approximately 170-year-old sacred ‘Standing Khade Hanuman ji’s murti, which historians believe may actually date back to the Parmar period and could be around 1,000 years old, to facilitate road widening.

The iron chains of cranes snapped. The hydraulic systems of heavy machinery failed. Yet the divine murti of Pavanputra Hanuman did not move even an inch from its position. What has unfolded over the past ten days has now turned into a matter of global curiosity and a vast ocean of faith. Tears flowing from the eyes of devotees who have arrived from different corners of the country, accompanied by the resonant verses of the Hanuman Chalisa, appear to testify to the belief that the awakened deity of the Treta Yuga continues to manifest in the present age of Kali Yuga.
When the Empire of Concrete Collided with the Threshold of Faith
The episode began as part of a road construction project, but rapidly transformed into a spiritual movement. Widening the busy route between Sati Gate and Kanthal for the grand Simhastha Mahakumbh was a priority for the administration.
According to the plan, the sanctum sanctorum and the tall permanent structures of the ancient temple, which stood in the middle of the proposed route, were demolished with bulldozers. Devotees were shaken as the temple’s roof and walls collapsed like a house of cards. But when the administration turned its attention towards Bajrangbali’s magnificent murti standing proudly inside the sanctum, it had no idea that it was about to encounter what many now regard as one of the greatest instances of spiritual resistance in history.

The administration initially regarded the matter as an ordinary relocation exercise. The assumption was that large cranes would arrive, the base of the murti would be cut, and within a few hours it would be installed at nearby Tanki Chowk. But destiny and Mahabali Hanuman himself, according to devotees, appeared to have something else in store. The moment the first machine attempted to make contact with the murti, the atmosphere at the site seemed to change.
Eight Major Attempts, Broken Chains and Modern Science at a Standstill
By the evening of 9 September, the administration had reportedly made eight major and forceful attempts to remove the murti. Initially, a conventional hydraulic crane was brought in, but the murti did not move. Subsequently, following advice from technical experts in Indore and Bhopal, some of the country’s most powerful Poklen machines and gigantic cranes were deployed at the site.
Thick iron straps and heavy chains were fastened around the murti. When the machinery exerted its full force, black smoke began emerging from the engine and the wheels appeared to lift from the ground. But then came what devotees described as a miracle: the steel chains of the crane snapped with a loud crack, while Hanuman Ji remained unmoved.

The faces of eyewitnesses and technical engineers present at the scene reportedly turned pale. Machines capable of lifting concrete girders weighing several tonnes as though they were toys stood helpless before a stone murti measuring just five and a half feet. Experts from the Archaeological Department intervened and warned that applying further mechanical force could result in the murti being damaged or fractured. Science had reached its limit, and the wheels of the heavy machinery were brought to a halt.
170 Years of History or 1,000 Years of Parmar-era Grandeur?
As the days pass, the mystery surrounding the temple appears to deepen. Until now, local people had regarded it as a roughly 170-year-old temple dating from the Scindia period. However, when the administration examined its foundations and a team of archaeologists conducted a detailed study, a startling possibility emerged.
Initial assessments of the murti’s distinctive craftsmanship, the nature of the stone and the carvings engraved upon it have indicated that the murti could date back to the era of Raja Bhoj and the Parmar dynasty, making it potentially around 1,000 years old. The revelation has added further intensity to the situation.
Historians believe that this may not simply be an ordinary installed murti, but a Siddha Peeth, a spiritually empowered sacred site, believed to have been connected with the earth through specialised Tantric and spiritual rituals centuries ago. This is why leading experts from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) are now being invited to examine the matter. Using high-tech 3D scanning, they are expected to investigate the divine structure believed to lie hidden beneath the ground.

Kanthal Becomes a Kurukshetra of Devotion: Social and Caste Barriers Begin to Disappear
The streets of Ujjain are now filled not merely with vehicles, but with an immense tide of devotees. As videos carrying headlines such as ‘Bulldozer Fails’ and ‘Bajrangbali’s Miracle’ went viral on social media, attention from across the country turned towards the site.
Thousands of devotees from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh have arrived at Kanthal Square without any formal invitation. The entire area has now been transformed into a temporary religious camp, where uninterrupted recitations of the Ramayana and Hanuman Chalisa are being conducted around the clock.
Perhaps the most beautiful and emotional aspect of the entire episode is that the movement has appeared to bridge communal and social distances. Local Muslim traders and residents have also stood shoulder to shoulder with Hindus in the campaign. They say: “We have seen this Lala (Hanuman Ji) here since childhood. He protects our businesses and our city. If he himself does not want to leave this place, what standing does a human being have to remove him?” At present, the air around Kanthal resonates only with chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Veer Hanuman’.

Give Us a Thousand Per Cent Guarantee, Otherwise Do Not Touch Him- Pujari’s Challenge
The main murti is currently completely safe and has been placed beneath a temporary canopy amid the rubble. The chief pujari of the temple, Sulabh Shantanu Sharma of the Balvijay Mast Hanuman Peeth, has placed a condition before the administrative authorities that has left the government facing a difficult dilemma.
The priest has stated unequivocally: “The administration must first give us a written 1,000 per cent guarantee that the murti will not suffer even a single scratch during the relocation. If they cannot provide that guarantee, they cannot even touch this divine Khade Hanuman ji’s murti.”
Pujari Sulabh Sharma has suggested that sufficient government and private land is available on both sides of the road. If that is the case, he asks, why should the deity be displaced simply because of administrative insistence? He argues that the road alignment could be altered slightly through a curved bypass, permanently protecting this historic heritage site and the faith of millions of people.
The Silence of the Night and the Administration’s Dilemma
As the sun sets, a unique mixture of tension and spirituality can be witnessed along this road in Ujjain. The administration has effectively turned the entire area into a security zone. CCTV cameras have been installed at every point and a large police contingent has been deployed to prevent any untoward incident or any secret administrative action under the cover of darkness.
Yet the devotion of the worshippers appears stronger than the police batons and guns. Throughout the night, young people, women and elderly devotees remain on vigil before the murti, tears in their eyes as they sing devotional songs. The administration now appears to be completely on the back foot.
On one side is the deadline for Simhastha development works; on the other are public anger and what devotees regard as a direct divine sign. The Chief Minister’s Office is also keeping a close watch on the entire matter, because the issue is no longer merely about a road in one city. It has now become, in the eyes of devotees, a question of the identity and dignity of Sanatan (Dharma)culture.

This is not merely the story of an murti that refused to move. It is also being seen as a warning against the blind race towards modernization, a reminder to pause and respect our roots, our history and our culture.
Science is now seeking a way forward through 3D scanning and computer simulations, but the faith of devotees remains unshaken: “Those who can move the entire universe, what can machines created by humans possibly do to move them?” At Kanthal Square, Hanuman Ji stands smiling, while human beings continue to deploy their mechanical power, seemingly determined to prove the strength of their own might. And there, before the unmoved deity, devotees continue to sing bhajans.
