NTA Answer Key Challenge Fee Explained; Rs 200 fee, refund rule and what candidates should check before objecting

Candidates who spot a genuine error in the NTA UGC answer key should verify the issue carefully before raising an objection. If justified, they can submit an answer key challenge within the deadline by paying the prescribed fee

New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has clarified its Rs 200 answer key challenge fee after candidates were raising concerns about the cost of challenging an answer they believe is incorrect. In a post on X, NTA clearly explained that the answer key challenge system is meant to maintain fairness in the examination process and is not designed to make money from students. The agency also pointed out that a valid challenge raised by one candidate can ultimately benefit every student who appeared for the examination.

The clarification is important because the provisional answer key gives candidates a chance to point out possible errors before the final answer key is prepared. However, the challenge process involves a fee, which has led some candidates to question whether students should have to pay to report a possible mistake in an official answer key. NTA has now explained why the fee is part of the process and what happens when a candidate’s objection is found to be correct.

Is the Rs 200 Answer Key Challenge Fee Refunded?

Another important point highlighted by NTA is the refund of the challenge fee. NTA clearly said that the Rs 200 fee is refunded when a candidate’s challenge is upheld. In other words, if the objection is examined and found to be correct, then in such a case, the candidate does not ultimately bear the Rs 200 cost for raising that valid challenge.

The fee is meant to discourage candidates from filing objections without proper grounds. Examination authorities can receive a very large number of challenges after the provisional answer key is released. The fee encourages students to raise objections only when they have a genuine concern and proper proof of an error.

On the concern being raised that answer key challenges are "too expensive": a quick clarification for candidates.

What Should Candidates Do Before Challenging an Answer?

Candidates should not challenge an answer key simply because they disagree with an answer. Before submitting an objection, they should carefully check the question, the answer mentioned in the provisional key and the relevant source or reference material. If there is strong evidence that the answer key released by NTA contains an error, candidates can use the official NTA answer key challenge process within the specified deadline.

It is also important to remember that the challenge window is generally available only for a limited period. Once the deadline closes, candidates may not get another opportunity to raise objections to the provisional answer key.

Why the answer key challenge process matters

The answer key challenge is an important stage between the conduct of an examination and the declaration of results. For candidates, it gives them an opportunity to flag possible mistakes, and for examination authorities, it gives a chance to review those objections before finalising the answer key and result. This becomes particularly important in large-scale examinations where a single question may affect the scores of thousands of students. If a genuine error is identified and accepted by subject experts, correcting that question ensures that candidates are evaluated using the revised answer key rather than an incorrect one.

NTA’s explanation is that the system is designed to encourage serious and evidence-based challenges. If a candidate’s objection is found to be correct, the Rs 200 fee is refunded. At the same time, the correction can benefit every candidate who appeared for the examination.
