Tarapith: A pre-dawn fire at a four-storey hotel in West Bengal’s Birbhum district claimed the lives of at least seven people and left several others injured, exposing serious questions over fire safety arrangements at a hotel packed with pilgrims during one of Tarapith’s busiest periods.

The blaze broke out at around 4.30 am on August 17, at Hotel Bideshinii, a G+4 building located near a pond and close to Tarapith police station. Most of the occupants were asleep when the fire erupted on the ground floor, leaving little time for them to react.

Preliminary information suggests that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the blaze. However, authorities have not yet established the exact cause and an investigation is underway.

Toxic smoke turned hotel into a death trap

While the flames began on the ground floor, it was the smoke that proved fatal. Burning materials including the false ceiling, fibreglass and other inflammable material in the reception area reportedly generated thick, toxic smoke that rapidly spread to the upper floors.

Officials said the seven victims died from suffocation after inhaling the smoke.

Guests who woke up amid the chaos struggled to understand what was happening. With smoke filling the building, several occupants reportedly became disoriented and were unable to immediately locate an escape route.

One survivor, Munmun Mondal, recalled the terrifying moments after the fire broke out, saying the hotel quickly filled with smoke and people struggled to breathe and find their way out.

Fire safety lapses under scanner

The tragedy has put the hotel’s fire preparedness under intense scrutiny. Officials indicated that the premises had little or no adequate fire detection and prevention equipment. A locked rear exit has also emerged as a major concern, potentially restricting an alternative escape route for guests trapped inside the building.

For a hotel operating in a major pilgrimage destination and accommodating large numbers of visitors, the alleged absence of adequate fire safety infrastructure raises questions about regulatory compliance and enforcement.

A fire that may have begun as an electrical fault turned into a fatal disaster because people sleeping several floors above the point of ignition were suddenly confronted with thick smoke, limited visibility and inadequate escape options.

Firefighters rushed to the hotel after the blaze was reported and managed to bring the fire under control. Rescue teams evacuated injured guests and shifted them to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.

Some of those injured are reportedly in critical condition. The authorities are now examining the circumstances surrounding the fire, including the hotel’s electrical systems, fire prevention arrangements, evacuation routes and the availability of emergency equipment.

The final cause of the fire will be established only after the investigation is completed.

Tragedy strikes on a crowded pilgrimage day

The fire broke out on the last Monday of Shravan, a day when Tarapith attracts large numbers of devotees. Tarapith is one of West Bengal’s major pilgrimage centres, with devotees visiting the revered Maa Tara Mandir. Bhagwan Shiva is worshipped here in the form of Chandrachur.

With the town crowded with pilgrims, hotels and guesthouses were accommodating visitors who had travelled to the area for worship.

Priya Roy, a local BJP worker who reached the spot to assist with rescue efforts, said early morning rain and the fact that many people were asleep meant that those nearby initially struggled to understand what was happening.

The combination of an early-morning blaze, sleeping occupants, dense smoke and inadequate evacuation arrangements proved devastating. The Tarapith tragedy also comes barely weeks after another deadly hotel fire in Delhi.

On July 3, a fire at the Flourish Stay B&B in Malviya Nagar claimed 21 lives, including 17 foreign nationals, and left more than 37 people injured. The Delhi fire reportedly began in the basement of a five-storey building before spreading rapidly.

Police subsequently registered an FIR for culpable homicide and investigated alleged violations of fire safety requirements, including the reported absence of a mandatory Fire NOC and the building’s narrow entry and exit arrangement.

Officials were also examining a possible electrical fault in the basement restaurant area as part of the investigation into the cause of the blaze.
