A fresh wave of tension has gripped West Bengal after a Hindu youth was reportedly assaulted in the Sainthia area of Birbhum district by Islamists. The incident allegedly occurred when local Muslims demanded money from Hindu residents for a Muharram programme. According to the report, the Hindu youth refused to pay, following which he was brutally beaten and is now battling for his life in the hospital.
The incident was first flagged by Hindu Voice on social media platform X stating: “Muslims are extorting money from Hindus for ‘Muharram program’ in Sainthia. A Hindu youth didn’t agree to give them money, so Muslims beat the Hindu youths very badly. The youth is now fighting for his life in the hospital.”

The victim, whose identity has not been officially released, is currently hospitalised and his condition is said to be critical. The incident quickly triggered anger among Hindus, who organised road blockades demanding justice and police action against the attackers.
Residents allege that similar patterns of intimidation and forced fund collection have been reported in several parts of West Bengal, where groups armed with sticks and sharp weapons are extorting money in the name of religious processions.
On X numerous netizens expressed shock and condemnation. A user reacted strongly:
“This is not a fund collection. This is extortion at knifepoint. Beating a Hindu boy for saying ‘No’ shows how emboldened radicals have become in West Bengal”
If this didn't stop then one day I hope Hindus will give them reply in the way they understand not with peaceful means

The hashtags #HinduLivesMatter, #JusticeForSainthiaVictim and #StopCommunialExtortion have gained traction as more images and testimonies emerge online.
This incident comes amid a backdrop of rising communal friction in the state. The recent Waqf land controversy, where allegations of large-scale land transfers without due transparency surfaced, has already stoked resentment among Hindu communities. The Birbhum assault has further deepened anger, with many calling for an impartial investigation and protection of minorities facing extortion threats.
Local leaders and activists have appealed to the state administration to restore law and order and address what they describe as systematic targeting of Hindus in sensitive districts.
