Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Smriti Irani has launched a sharp attack on the Congress-JMM government in Jharkhand over the alleged irregularities in the state’s recruitment examinations, accusing it of failing thousands of aspirants while questioning what she described as the “selective outrage” surrounding examination-related controversies.
Speaking during an interview with India Today, Irani contrasted the widespread attention given to protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar with the comparatively limited focus on the ongoing agitation by JPSC aspirants in Ranchi.
Her remarks come as protests demanding cancellation of the 14th Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) Civil Services Preliminary Examination, a CBI probe and reforms in the state’s recruitment process continue to intensify.
‘Tyranny of Distance’ Behind Lack of Attention
Irani argued that the agitation in Jharkhand had not received the same level of public discourse or media attention as demonstrations held in the national capital.
Describing the disparity as the “tyranny of distance”, she said the geographical location of the protests had influenced the scale of national attention.
“There is a gap in reportage between what happened at Jantar Mantar and what is happening in Jharkhand,” she said.
According to Irani, the concerns of students protesting in Ranchi deserve the same level of attention as those raised during the protests in Delhi.
Congress-JMM Government Under Fire
Targeting the Congress-JMM coalition led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Irani alleged that the state government had failed to protect the interests of students and job aspirants affected by the alleged examination irregularities.
Her remarks come amid mounting pressure on the Jharkhand government, with students continuing their agitation over allegations of irregularities in the recruitment process and demanding cancellation of the examination.
The controversy has already prompted the state government to order a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) probe, while the Civil Services Main Examination has been postponed as investigations continue.
Questions Opposition’s Approach
Irani also criticised opposition parties for, according to her, focusing on criticism of the Central government without presenting constructive solutions to strengthen India’s examination system.
“Nobody in the opposition has anything constructive to add on how to strengthen structures,” she said during the interview.
She argued that political criticism should be accompanied by concrete proposals aimed at improving transparency and credibility in competitive examinations.
Defends Centre’s Education Reforms
Responding to suggestions that the recent examination controversies reflected growing dissatisfaction among young voters with the Narendra Modi government, Irani rejected the claim.
She maintained that the Central government had responded through legislative, administrative and institutional reforms rather than political rhetoric.
Highlighting the government’s initiatives, Irani referred to the National Education Policy (NEP), saying it emerged after one of the most extensive public consultation exercises conducted in independent India.
She also pointed to the enactment of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, commonly referred to as the anti-paper leak law, as well as the constitution of a dedicated task force to address examination-related irregularities.
According to Irani, these measures demonstrate the Centre’s commitment to strengthening the integrity of India’s examination system.
Debate Over Examination Reforms Continues
Irani’s remarks come amid continuing political and public debate over examination integrity following the recruitment irregularities in Jharkhand and the nationwide discussions triggered by the NEET controversy.
The BJP has repeatedly accused the Congress-JMM government of mishandling recruitment examinations and failing to ensure a transparent selection process for government jobs.
The Centre, meanwhile, has maintained that it has introduced structural reforms, legislative safeguards and institutional mechanisms to curb paper leaks and restore confidence in public examinations.
With the agitation in Ranchi showing no signs of slowing and demands for a CBI investigation growing louder, the alleged Jharkhand recruitment scam is expected to remain a major political issue in the state in the coming weeks.
