Keralam University VC advises aspirants to verify medical college credentials before admission

Kerala University of Health Sciences Vice Chancellor Dr. Mohanan Kunnummel has cautioned the students and their guardians not to fall prey to the hollow claims of the medical colleges. He called on them to examine the recognition and legal validity of the institutions clearly before the admission.

The Vice Chancellor stated in his press release, of July 18, that Medical, Dental, Nursing, Pharmacy and Para Medical courses in the state are required to have the recognition of the Kerala Health University. Apart from the Kerala University of Health Sciences, Coimbatore-based Amritha Vishwavidya Peetham Deemed-To-Be University alone enjoys the recognition to run the courses in their institutions in Kerala.

Dr. Mohanan Kunnummel warned that some institutions do not clearly state the legal recognition, affiliation and legal validity of the course; still they encourage the students to join health science-related courses like BSc Nursing, GNM (General Nursing & Midwifery), Optometry, Operation Theatre Technology, Cardiac and Care Technology.

VC called on the students and guardians not to fall victim to the tall promises of these institutions. Students should make sure that after passing the examination they are eligible to get the registration with the Allied Health Professional Council.

They have to make sure that the Allied Health Science Degree Courses are recognised by either Kerala Health University or Amrita Vishwavidya Peetham. Para Medical Diploma Courses should be recognised by the government.

VC made it clear that University does not give recognition online or by correspondence for medical courses, especially for homeopathy. No correspondence course is not legally permissible for it. The holders of these sorts of certificates will not get professional registration. Those who practise based on these certificates will be treated as fake doctors or quacks. No recognised Naturopathy Degree Programmes are available in Keralam.

Dr. Kunnummel stated that those who intend to study MBBS abroad should have definitely passed the NEET examination. They should check in advance if the course is recognised by the Medical Regulatory Authority of that country and if that course is recognised back home.

The Vice Chancellor gives some tips to the students who study MBBS abroad. According to the existing rules, when they come back home after completing studies, they have to pass Foreign Medical Graduate (FMG) examination and complete one year’s compulsory internship. Then only they can obtain Medical Registration and Permission for Medical Practice.

The Vice Chancellor’s tips are quite relevant as hundreds of several education institutions mushroom in the state every year. And, thousands of students are carried away by the advertisements ‘Study Abroad’. Several of them lose their parents’ hard-earned money. Hope, the aspirants will study Dr. Mohanan Kunnumel’s tips carefully so that they can avoid pitfalls.
