BMS to hold demonstration on August 17; Press for Rs 7,500 EPS pension and labour reforms

NEW DELHI: The Kendriya Karya Samithi (Central Working Committee) of the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) has demanded that the Central Government immediately resolve the long-pending problems of workers. The 161st KKS meeting of BMS directed all its units to observe August 17 as “Demands Day” and organise dharnas and demonstrations at all District Headquarters, State Headquarters and industrial estates to mount pressure on the Government of India.

The demands include:

  • Raising the minimum EPS pension from Rs 1,000 to Rs 7,500 along with VDA and linking it with the Ayushman Bharat Yojana.
  • Doubling the ceiling limits of ESIC, EPF and Bonus calculations.
  • Revising the gratuity calculation formula from 15 days to 30 days without any ceiling limit.
  • Restoring the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
  • Increasing the honorarium of all categories of scheme workers.
  • Implementing equal pay for equal work, including for contract workers.
  • Raising minimum wages in line with the changing price index.
  • Implementing a five-day work week in banks.
  • Clearing pending wages of employees of Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC), Ranchi, and 23 National Textile Mills located across eight states.
  • Amending the anti-worker provisions in the Labour Codes.

BMS has called upon all its units to submit memorandums addressed to the Hon’ble Prime Minister and Labour Ministers through the respective district authorities.

The 161st KKS meeting, held from July 26 to 28, 2026, in Ranchi, was chaired by Sri Sunkari Mallesham, All India President of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh. A total of 173 members, including 32 women, participated in the meeting.

The KKS also thanked the International Labour Conference (ILO) for adopting the Convention on “Decent Work on the Platform Economy” through consensus among the tripartite partners. BMS decided to organise seminars and street-corner meetings to create awareness about the convention among platform workers.

The meeting also congratulated the BRICS Trade Union Forum for the successful summit and the unanimous adoption of the Hyderabad Declaration. It further resolved to continue the work of all four BRICS task forces:

  • Skills for the Future
  • Human-Centric Technology and AI
  • Women and the Future of Work
  • Social Security for All

These task forces will undertake in-depth studies and make recommendations to BRICS+ governments on these important issues.
