The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Delhi staged a massive demonstration today outside the Arts Faculty of Delhi University against the administration’s anti-student policies, primarily focusing on the inadequate number of seats in one-year postgraduate (PG) courses. Following the protest, a memorandum was submitted to the DU Registrar, Prof. Vikas Gupta. Students from various colleges across Delhi University participated in the demonstration, demanding an immediate increase in seats from the university administration.
Notably, under the National Education Policy (NEP), the ratio of seats in one-year postgraduate courses relative to the number of students completing the four-year undergraduate program is significantly low. As a result, a large number of qualified and eligible students are being deprived of admission. Keeping the growing number of students in mind, ABVP has demanded an adequate increase in seats across all one-year postgraduate courses so that no meritorious student is denied higher education simply due to a shortage of seats. During the protest, students strongly presented their demands before the university administration and called for a swift increase in seats for these courses.
ABVP Delhi State Secretary Sarthak Sharma said, “The University of Delhi remains the first choice for lakhs of students across the country. However, the inadequate number of seats under the current admission system is doing grave injustice to students’ academic aspirations. The number of students seeking admission to one-year postgraduate programmes after completing the four-year undergraduate programme is increasing every year. Therefore, the university administration must immediately enhance the number of seats to ensure that no deserving student is denied access to higher education due to seat constraints.”
He further stated that following ABVP’s protest and the submission of the memorandum, the University administration has constituted a committee under the leadership of the Dean academic affair to examine the matter and take a decision in the interest of students within ten days. He added that if the university administration fails to take a prompt and positive decision, ABVP will further intensify its movement to safeguard students’ interests.
