While the mortal remains of Nand Kishore Goenka Ji have merged with the five elements, his philosophy of life, his dedication to duty, his spirit of service, and the ideals he established will continue to illuminate the path of society forever. He was among those who never placed themselves at the centre, but made society, the nation, and culture the centre of their lives. His personality was as vast as it was humble, as influential as it was self-disciplined. He was truly a Karmayogi.
Born on September 28, 1930 on the sacred soil of Hisar, Haryana, Shri Nand Kishore Goenka Ji built his life on the foundation of Indian values, hard work, and moral principles. The struggles of his early life made him self-reliant, while the values imparted by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh transformed him into a dedicated practitioner of national life. He never aspired for fame, but regarded every action as an offering to God and a medium of service to the nation.
The country generally knows him as the revered father of renowned industrialist and media pioneer Dr. Subhash Chandra Ji, founder of the Essel Group. However, those who knew him closely are aware that his own identity was far more expansive. He was a guide to society, a trusted organisational worker, a devoted servant of Gau Seva, an inspiration for the Agrawal community, and a vigilant sentinel of national life.
A Life Shaped by Sangh Sanskars
For him, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was not merely an organisation but a way of life. He remained a dedicated, disciplined, and committed Swayamsevak throughout his life. He imbibed the Sangh’s core principle of “Nation First” with complete sincerity. For him, patriotism was not a subject of speeches but a way of life. Discipline, punctuality, humility, self-restraint, and organisational spirit were naturally embedded in his personality.
Vishva Hindu Parishad and the Resolve to Protect Dharma
As the Vice President of the Haryana Prant of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and as a member of its Central Gau Raksha Team, his contribution was highly significant. He believed that the organisation of Hindu society was not merely the responsibility of an institution but the duty of every conscious citizen. He extended his wholehearted support—through his time, efforts, and resources—to the Parishad’s work in the fields of service, values, social harmony, and Dharma Jagaran.
For him, Gau Raksha was not merely an agitation; it was a mission to protect Indian culture, agriculture, rural life, and compassion. He regarded Gau Mata as the foundation of Indian civilisation. His active association with numerous Gaushalas and Gau Raksha initiatives stood as testimony to this vision.
Paying tribute to him, Vishwa Hindu Parishad International President Shri Alok Kumar said, “While the mortal body of Shri Nand Kishore Goenka Ji has today merged with the five elements, his virtues, deeds, nature, and greatness shall remain everlasting. As a dedicated Swayamsevak of the Sangh, he rendered selfless service throughout his life.
As a true descendant of Maharaja Agrasen, he developed Agroha Dham into a pilgrimage centre for the Vaishya community. His contribution as the Vice President of Vishwa Hindu Parishad Haryana Prant and as a member of the Central Gau Raksha Team will always be remembered. He was a true servant of Gau Mata and dedicated his entire life to Bharat Mata.”
Agroha Dham: A Vision, A Lifelong Pursuit
Maharaja Agrasen, remembered from the era of the Mahabharata, is not merely a historical personality but a symbol of the Indian tradition of equality, cooperation, and public welfare, embodied in the ideal of “one brick and one-and-a-quarter rupees.” Shri Nand Kishore Goenka Ji resolved to carry this legacy to every section of society.
His contribution to the development of Agroha Dham was immense. He envisioned it not merely as a temple complex or memorial but as a centre of cultural consciousness, social unity, and national renaissance for the Vaishya community. Today, Agroha Dham serves as a centre of faith, inspiration, and organisation for lakhs of devotees from across the country. His contribution to this achievement will always be remembered with respect.
Social Service: Not Publicity, But a Way of Life
He believed that the noblest form of service is that which expects no recognition. Therefore, he never publicised his work. His support remained constant for education, healthcare, religious institutions, social organisations, and people in need.
He believed that society does not become great through economic prosperity alone; it also requires values, education, and service. Accordingly, he encouraged numerous social and educational initiatives and worked tirelessly to unite society.
Simplicity: The Greatest Hallmark of His Personality
At a time when prestige is increasingly measured by outward display, the life of Shri Nand Kishore Goenka Ji stood as an unparalleled example of simplicity. Despite belonging to a highly distinguished family, there was no ostentation in his life. He was approachable, humble, and warm-hearted. No one who came to his doorstep ever felt like a stranger.
There was sweetness in his speech, warmth in his conduct, and clarity in his decisions. He possessed the ability to listen, and it was for this reason that society held him in such high regard.
The Priceless Values He Passed on to His Family
Behind every great family stands a great source of values. Shri Nand Kishore Goenka Ji played that role for the Goenka family. He not only showed his children the path to success but also taught them that the purpose of success is to fulfil one’s responsibility towards society. The diligence, courage, innovation, and Indianness reflected in the personalities of Dr Subhash Chandra Ji, Laxmi Narayan Ji, Jawahar Ji, and Ashok Goyal Ji clearly bear the imprint of the values imparted by their father.
At the age of 96, his life’s journey reached its completion. As his last rites were performed on the sacred soil of Hisar, it was not merely a family but an entire era of society that bid him farewell. Countless Swayamsevaks, saints, social workers, industrialists, public representatives, and ordinary citizens gathered to pay their final respects. This honour was not for any position, but for a life of penance and dedication.
Nand Kishore Goenka Ji demonstrated through his life that neither office nor position is necessary for serving the nation and society; what is required is selfless intent, unwavering resolve, and continuous action. Throughout his life, he embodied the dedication of a Sangh Swayamsevak, the commitment of a Vishva Hindu Parishad worker, the compassion of a Gau Bhakt, the social consciousness of an Agravanshi, and the dignity of an ideal Indian householder.
His life was the living embodiment of the Indian cultural ideal in which Dharma, service, organisation, compassion, humility, and patriotism complement one another.
Though he is no longer physically among us, the tree of values he planted will continue to provide shade to future generations. His ideals will continue to guide society. His lifelong penance will continue to inspire national life.
