Bhopal: A Scheduled Tribe (ST) student has accused an office-bearer of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the student wing affiliated with the Congress party, of rape, sexual harassment and criminal intimidation during the organisation’s nationwide ‘Chhatra Goonj Ki Awaaz’ campaign in Bhopal.
According to the complaint, Piplani Police Station in Bhopal has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against NSUI District General Secretary Subhash Yadav under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
The complainant has alleged that the incident occurred during the student outreach campaign and accused the NSUI functionary of sexual assault and issuing threats. The FIR has been registered, and the matter is now under police investigation.
The case has sparked political attention as it involves allegations against a functionary associated with the Congress-backed student organisation. According to the allegations contained in the complaint, the survivor also faced difficulties in getting her complaint registered and had to approach authorities for nearly two days before the FIR was lodged.
The victim alleged that certain local and state-level NSUI office-bearers attempted to suppress the matter, pressured the complainant to reach a compromise and ignored her grievance. These allegations have not been independently verified.
The case has led to demands for the immediate arrest of the accused, a fair and time-bound investigation, and an inquiry into the alleged role of individuals accused of influencing or obstructing the complaint process. There have also been calls for legal action if investigators uncover evidence of any organised attempt to shield the accused.
