Jakarta: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 7, Tuesday held a bilateral meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. This signifies the inaugural bilateral visit between the two nations since they elevated the diplomatic relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018. The high-level engagement injected further momentum into the partnership, with bilateral defence and maritime coordination positioned high on the shared agenda.

The enduring civilisational links between India and Indonesia mirror a booming modern economic relationship, where Indonesia stands as India’s second-largest commercial trading partner within the ASEAN bloc. Total bilateral trade volumes reached USD 24.78 billion during the 2025-26 fiscal year and more than 130 Indian business corporations maintain active investment footprints spanning various sectors of the Indonesian domestic economy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the deepening bilateral ties between India and Indonesia, describing the growing partnership as a “new golden chapter” that holds significant promise for the 21st century. The Ministry of External Affairs listed out the 20 Memorandums of Understanding signed between the two nations which included cooperation on the BrahMos missile system and the setting up of an Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore branch campus at Singhasari SEZ.
Cooperation to strengthen critical mineral supply chain
To strengthen critical mineral supply chain, India will invest in manufacturing of steel, nickel and rare earth permanent magnets in Indonesia. The MoU also improves access to advanced extraction and processing technologies and encourages joint studies and projects.
In this reagrd, MoU was signed between Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC), Midwest Ltds. and PT PERMINAS on development of rare earth magnets. Strategic Joint Venture between Steel Authority of India (SAIL) and Pt. Krakatau Steel was initiated for establishment of Stainless-Steel Slab manufacturing facility in Indonesia. This advances joint production and access to technology. It promotes job creation especially for the youth and adds to industrial development and Viksit Bharat goals.
Joint development of Sabang port in the Malacca strait
India and Indonesia are set to jointly develop Sabang port which overlooks the Strait of Malacca and is 100 miles away from India’s Great Nicobar port project. MoU was also signed to enhance maritime security and ccoperation between Coast Guards of the two countries. The aim is to improves coordination in maritime domain awareness, search and rescue and capacity building for the safety and inclusiveness of the Indo-Pacific region.
For maritime security, deployment of Indonesian Liaison Officer in the Indian Ocean RegionI(FC-IOR) will be done. This enhances real-time maritime information sharing and strengthens bilateral maritime security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
Security relations between New Delhi and Jakarta have expanded significantly in recent years, driven by frequent high-level official exchanges, regular joint military manoeuvresa and collaborative defence industry initiatives. Underscoring this focus on regional stability, the MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions) framework serves as India’s institutional vision for promoting security, stability and inclusive developmental growth across the maritime domain.
Collaboration in the space sector
Extension of framework agreement on cooperation in exploration and uses of outer space for peaceful purposes was sealed between India and Indonesia. This promotes joint research, technology sharing and capacity building. It R\reinforces a three decade-long space partnership between New Delhi and Jakarta.
Restoration of Prambanan temple complex
India’s assistance will be extended for conservation and restoration of the 1000 year-old Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta Indoensia. This advances preservation of shared heritage and strengthens India’s cultural diplomacy and showcases its expertise in heritage conservation and preservation of shared civilisational heritage.
PM Modi described the monument as “another remarkable testament” to deep cultural and civilisational ties that have connected India and Indonesia for over a thousand years. This conservation project is part of India’s cultural diplomacy and Act East policy in Southeast Asia. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is partnering with Indonesian authorities for restoration and conservation of several smaller temples within the Prambanan complex.
Prambanan is among the largest temple complex near Yogyakarta, on the Indonesian island of Java and contains the original structures that were built in the 9th century AD. The temples collapsed due to earthquake, repeated volcanic eruption and other political reasons. The Prambanan temple is a complex consisting of 240 temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. It is a UNESCO world heritage site.
MoU on agriculture and allied sectors
MoU on cooperation in the field of agriculture and allied sectors was sealed. It advances cooperation in sustainable agriculture, crops, agriculture machinery excahnge among others. It promotes joint study and research benefitting farmers. It enables food security and higher incomes for farmers in both the countries.
In this regard, India will supply of 100 tonnes of high-quality DWR 162 wheat seeds to Indonesia and will supports food security of Indonesia and the Global South. It also advances broader engagement in developing resilient and sustainable agricultural cooperation.
Joint disaster management initiatives
MoU between National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and National Agency for Disaster Management, Indonesia was inked. It advances sharing of best practices in disaster management and promotes the use of tech-based applications for early warning and risk assessment. It also improves coordination in disaster response and recovery.
MoUs in the technology, quantum & innovation ecosystem
MoU on cooperation in the field of telecommunications technologies and services was signed to improves access to advanced telecom technologies, including wireless and quantum systems. This also supports joint innovation and technology exchange.
MoU on research, technology and innovation cooperation was also which strengthens India’s innovation ecosystem by enabling collaboration in key sectors. It advances knowledge exchange, best practices and tech support. It also adds leverage to the startup and innovation ecosystem under the Startup India Mission.
Cooperation between Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and Indonesia Open Network (ION) is accelerated. This promotes cooperation in Digital Public Infrastructure(DPI) modelled on the architecture of India’s ONDC. It harnesses the power of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) across the globe to make services more accessible, efficient and inclusive for the benifit of people.
IIM branch in Indonesia
With respect to educational cooperation, setting up of Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore branch campus at Singhasari SEZ, Indonesia is envisioned. This showcases India’s academic excellence globally and strengthens India’s reputation as a knowledge hub.
Indonesia President hails PM Modi & immitates India’s growth model
In a light-hearted moment carrying a deeper strategic message, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto openly acknowledging his admiration for India’s growth model. Addressing PM Modi directly, President Subianto praised India’s developmental strides and candidly stated, “I follow your career and I copied many of your programmes. I don’t mind admitting, because if it succeeds for hundreds of million people with the same background as Indonesia”, it succeeds for Indonesia as well.
The Indonesian leader further highlighted that these adapted strategies are already delivering positive outcomes on the ground, and added “it’s proving to be successful for us. So, thank you very much. I’m very happy there’s no copyright to all your programmes”. Demonstrating that this policy alignment is actively translating into bilateral exchange, President Subianto revealed that a delegation from Jakarta recently concluded an intensive study of India’s agricultural innovations.
“The outcomes from PM Modi’s visit to Indonesia are comprehensive, substantive and futuristic. The India-Indonesia friendship will keep scaling new heights in the years to come” PM Modi reiterated.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined that India and Indonesia shared the same steadfast commitment against terrorism and thanked the Indonesian leadership for support during the Pahalgam terror attack. Further in his address to the Indonesian Parliament today, the Indian Prime Minister also underlined the need for urgent reforms of the UN Security Council in a rapidly evolving global order.

Addressing a joint session of the Indonesian Parliament, the Kompleks Parlemen Republik Indonesia, PM Modi said, “On matters such as terrorism, India and Indonesia have had one unequivocal vision. Last year during the dastardly terror attack in Pahalgam, Indonesia stood firmly with India in that moment. I express my gratitude to President Prabowo and all of you”. Both countries are working closely to counter terrorism through the Joint Working Group mechanism, he said.

“Intelligence, cyber threats, terror funding and deradicalisation, by increasing our cooperation in these areas, we can strengthen the pacifist forces in the world,”, PM Modi said. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific and stressed the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in the region.
Noting how the global order is rapidly evolving in the current day and age, Prime Minister Modi said that countries like India and Indonesia are seeking equal participation and a significant role. “In this global landscape, India firmly believes that reform of the UNSC can no longer be delayed”, he said.
In his remarks, he underlined the longstanding partnership between India and Indonesia and said, “Both our nations gained independence around the same time: Indonesia in 1945 and India in 1947. When it came to sovereignty as independent nations, India became a strong voice in support of Indonesia’s independence movement at the United Nations. The role played by the respected Biju Patnaik during that period, the way he safely brought Prime Minister Sutan Sjahrir and Vice President Mohammad Hatta to India brought the two nations closer”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also underlined how New Delhi places ASEAN at the core of India’s Act East Policy and gave a call for further strengthening the priorities of the Global South. Addressing the Parliament of Indonesia PM Modi recalled how Indonesia’s G20 presidency in 2022, followed by India’s presidency in 2023, brought the conversation about prioritising the demands of developing countries to the global forefront.
Be it Indonesia’s G20 Presidency in 2022 or India’s G20 Presidency in 2023, both sought to bring the priorities of the Global South to the centre of the global agenda.

“India is a staunch supporter of a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific. India advocates for freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific region. We have placed ASEAN at the centre of this approach; our ‘Act East Policy’ is also ASEAN-centric. The comprehensive strategic partnership between India and ASEAN continues to advance steadily. Therefore, it is essential that India and Indonesia must continue to work together in this directio”, PM Modi added.
He noted how India’s vision of strategic autonomy and Indonesia’s Bebas-Aktif (Independent and Active) approach brings the two countries closer while addressing important global issues. Highlighting how Indonesia recently became the full-member of the BRICS grouping, PM Modi underlined the opportunity ahead of the two nations and said that with India at the helm this year, the two countries can work in tandem to bring the priorities of the Global South to the forefront.
In the Parliament, PM Modi also spoke about the enduring civilisational bonds and shared democratic values linking India and Indonesia and called for a future-oriented partnership aligned with the aspirations of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Golden Indonesia 2045. PM Modi also reaffirmed India’s commitment to working with Indonesia to further deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership, strengthen the voice of the Global South and advancing a free, open, inclusive and rules-based Indo-Pacific and called for a new beginning in India-Indonesia relationship based on the Ganga-Mahakam Vision for bilateral engagement.
