Bhubaneswar: As Mahaprabhu Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra enter the sacred Anasara period following the grand Snana Purnima rituals, the spiritual focus of devotees has shifted from the revered Jagannath Mandir in Puri to the historic Alarnath Mandir at Brahmagiri. With the deities remaining in seclusion for a fortnight inside the Anasara Ghara, thousands of pilgrims from Odisha and across the country are thronging the Alarnath shrine, where they believe Mahaprabhu Jagannath manifests himself during this sacred period.
The annual Anasara ritual marks one of the most unique traditions associated with the Mahaprabhu Jagannath. According to centuries-old belief, the Mahaprabhu Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra fall ill after receiving the ceremonial bath with 108 pitchers of sanctified and aromatic water during Deva Snana Purnima. The deities are then moved to the Anasara Ghara, where they remain away from public view for 15 days to recuperate through traditional rituals and Ayurvedic treatment.
A Fortnight of Divine Seclusion
During Anasara, devotees are unable to have darshan of the presiding deities at the 12th-century Jagannath Mandir. Instead, temple servitors perform secret rituals and worship the deities in a symbolic form known as the Pati Deities. The traditional Anasara Patti, painted representations of Mahaprabhu Jagannath, Mahaprabhu Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra, are worshipped inside the temple during this period.

Even the darshan of Patitapabana, the representative image of Mahaprabhu Jagannath installed near the Simha Dwara, remains suspended until the completion of the Anasara rituals.
According to Mandir traditions, the deities are treated with Phuluri Tela, a special herbal oil prepared from medicinal herbs and plants. The ritual signifies the traditional Ayurvedic healing process that restores the deities’ health before they reappear in their rejuvenated Nabajouban Besha ahead of the famous Rath Yatra.
Alarnath Mandir Becomes the Centre of Devotion
With the doors of the Jagannath Mandir closed to devotees, the centuries-old Alarnath Mandir at Brahmagiri, located around 23 kilometres from Puri, transforms into one of Odisha’s most significant pilgrimage destinations.

From the early hours of Tuesday, thousands of devotees lined up outside the Mandir despite intermittent rainfall and overcast skies. Carrying tulsi leaves, flowers, and offerings, pilgrims patiently waited for hours to seek the blessings of Mahaprabhu Alarnath, convinced that darshan here during Anasara carries the same spiritual merit as witnessing Mahaprabhu Jagannath in Puri.
The Mandir administration reported a massive influx of devotees and made elaborate arrangements to ensure smooth darshan and crowd management throughout the day.
Centuries-Old Faith Linked to Alabandaracharya
The belief connecting Mahaprabhu Alarnath with Mahaprabhu Jagannath during Anasara has deep historical and spiritual roots.
Around the 10th century CE, Alabandaracharya, a revered saint of the Alvar Vaishnava tradition from present-day Tamil Nadu in southern India, is believed to have visited Puri. Several fascinating legends are associated with him, particularly highlighting the depth of his devotion to Mahaprabhu Jagannath. According to tradition, when Alabandaracharya arrived in Puri, Mahaprabhu Jagannath was in the Anasara Ghara, the sacred chamber where the deities retire for rest and recuperation after the Snana Purnima rituals. As public darshan was suspended during this period, the saint was deeply distressed at being unable to behold the Mahaprabhu.
Moved by his intense devotion, he proceeded to the shrine where Mahaprabhu Jagannath was believed to manifest symbolically during the Anasara period and offered his prayers there. That sacred shrine is known today as the Alarnath Mandir at Brahmagiri. This belief has continued uninterrupted for centuries and draws lakhs of pilgrims every year during the Anasara period.
The Alarnath Mandir is renowned for its unique four-armed standing idol of Mahaprabhu Vishnu carved from black chlorite stone. Historians trace the temple’s origins to the 9th century, with its construction traditionally attributed to King Vanudev IV.
Famous Khiri Bhog Draws Pilgrims
The Mandirs celebrated Khiri Bhog, a traditional rice pudding prepared with milk and other ingredients, remains one of its biggest attractions. Thousands of devotees eagerly receive the sacred offering after darshan, considering it an integral part of their pilgrimage to Alarnath. The cooked mahaprasad served at the Mandir also witnesses overwhelming demand throughout the Anasara period.
Extensive Security and Crowd Management Measures
Anticipating a heavy turnout of devotees and tourists, the district administration and temple authorities have strengthened security arrangements across the Mandir premises.
Seven platoons of police personnel have been deployed to regulate queues and maintain law and order. More than 50 CCTV cameras have been installed at strategic locations to monitor crowd movement, while dedicated arrangements have been made for traffic regulation, drinking water, medical assistance, sanitation, and emergency services.

Officials expect the number of pilgrims to increase significantly over the coming days as the Anasara rituals continue.
Awaiting the Return of Mahaprabhu
The Anasara period concludes with the grand Nabajouban Darshan, when Mahaprabhu Jagannath, Mahaprabhu Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra reappear before devotees in their rejuvenated form. This is followed by the world-renowned Rath Yatra, one of India’s largest and most celebrated religious festivals.
Until then, the historic Alarnath Mandir continues to serve as the spiritual destination for countless devotees, preserving a centuries-old tradition that beautifully reflects the enduring faith and unique ritual heritage of Mahaprabhu Jagannath.
