Aligarh police arrest Anwar Hussain, brother of Samajwadi Party leader in beef smuggling case
Aligarh: In a significant development in a months-long investigation into an alleged beef smuggling racket, Aligarh Police on June 19 arrested Anwar Hussain, the brother of former Union Minister and senior Samajwadi Party leader Sarwar Hussain. The accused was taken into custody from his residence in Khurja town of Bulandshahr district and later sent to judicial custody by a local court.
Anwar Hussain, a resident of Khwaishiyan locality in Pathanwara, Khurja, owns the Al-Hamd Meat Factory, which police claim was linked to a consignment of beef seized earlier this year. The case traces back to January 15, 2026, when police intercepted a vehicle in Chandaus village of Aligarh district following specific intelligence inputs regarding the transportation of illegal meat. During the operation, authorities recovered more than 700 kilograms of meat from the vehicle.
The seized samples were subsequently sent to a government laboratory in Mathura for forensic examination. According to police officials, the laboratory report, received last month, confirmed that the seized meat was beef.
Following the confirmation, a case was registered under relevant provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, and various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to Circle Officer (CO) Gabhana Mahesh Kumar, the investigation gathered momentum after the driver of the intercepted vehicle was questioned. During interrogation, the driver allegedly revealed that the meat consignment had originated from the Al-Hamd Meat Factory operated by Anwar Hussain in Khurja.
Based on the evidence collected and the laboratory findings, police teams intensified their investigation and gathered material linking the factory to the seized consignment. On Friday, a police team led by Chandaus Inspector Satyaveer Singh conducted the arrest operation and took Anwar Hussain into custody. A day before Anwar’s arrest, police had arrested Islam Khan, an employee of the Al-Hamd Meat Factory. Islam Khan is a resident of Tiliyapur village under the CB Ganj police station area of Bareilly district.
Investigators believe that Islam Khan played a role in the transportation and handling of the meat linked to the case. His arrest reportedly provided additional leads that strengthened the case against the factory owner.
Following their arrests, both Anwar Hussain and Islam Khan were produced before a magistrate. The court subsequently remanded them to judicial custody pending further investigation. Police officials stated that the probe remains ongoing and that authorities are examining whether additional individuals were involved in the alleged procurement, transportation and distribution network connected to the seized beef consignment.
