The meeting between Jamaat-e-Islami Hind leaders and Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheeshan, along with Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and Industries Minister P.K. Kunjalikkutty in Thiruvananthapuram on June 5, has drawn attention amid the organisation’s growing engagement with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) government.
There are unconfirmed reports that the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind delegates told the ministers about their (Jamaat-e-Islami Hind’s) agendas that they are keen to implement during the coming five years, which is the tenure of the Chief Minister, who took office in May. Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Kerala Ameer P. Mujeeburahman led the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind delegation.
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Central Shoora member M.I. Yousuf Azeez, General Secretary T.K. Farooq, Secretary Shihab Pookkottur, Assistant Secretaries Samad Kunnakkav and K. Najathullah, and Sub-Zone Secretary Sakkeer Nemom were the other members of the delegation. Much before the Assembly elections of April 9, 2026, Congress and the Muslim League had started to cultivate a good rapport with Jamaat-e-Islami.
On one such occasion, V.D. Satheeshan had even told the media that Jamaat-e-Islami had given up its doctrine of a ‘Theocratic State’. However, they immediately shot back, stating that they had not given up any of their basic tenets. Satheeshan did not say anything further in this regard. It is a fact that the Indian Union Muslim League, the second-largest UDF partner, might have played the role of a bridge between Satheeshan and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.
But for the Muslim League’s pressure, Satheeshan would not have become the Chief Minister of the state. The excellent camaraderie between the Indian Union Muslim League and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind is a fact as clear as daylight.
