As a testament to the growing indigenous medical capabilities and India’s emergence as a credible leader in the healthcare ecosystem, an Indian-origin surgeon has performed world’s longest cardiac telesurgery from Guyana to a patient in India with the aid of Made-in-India SSI Mantra surgical robot. This illustrates the potential of India in terms of medical manpower and also the country’s growing footprint in cutting-edge medical technology & healthcare innovation that facilitates borderless and seamless medicine for global well-being.

The Indian-origin cardiac surgeon Dr. Sudhir Srivastava is an expert robotic cardiac surgeon based in Guyana and is also the founder of SS Innovations. He remotely conducted a robot-assisted heart surgery to a patient situated in India. The surgeon and the patient were separated by a distance of 20,000kms. The remarkable feat in the telesurgery was, it was assisted by a Made-in-India surgical robot. The surgery was linked between Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation(GPHC), Guyana and IRCAD in Indore, India.

The surgery involved a Left Internal Mammary Artery(LIMA) takedown, which is a key step in the coronary bypass surgery. As mentioned the operation was assisted by the SSI Mantra robotic surgical system and the procedure was completed in approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes. The surgery was conducted over a fibre-optic network spanning nearly 20,000 kilometres, with a reported communication delay of around 290-300 milliseconds.

India scripts medical history!

A world record has been set with the successful completion of the world’s longest-distance robot-assisted cardiac telesurgery, spanning nearly 20,000 km between Guyana and India.

Post the successful completion of the surgery, Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, Chairman and CEO of SS Innovations International said, “The successful completion of this intercontinental cardiac telesurgery marks a significant milestone for telesurgery and moves us closer to expanding access to specialised surgical expertise globally. With each new remote procedure, we continue to push the boundaries of telesurgery and move closer to democratizing access to world-class surgical expertise globally”.

Reacting to the incredible medical feat with Indian-origin technology, the President of Guyana Mohamed Irfaan Ali described the procedure as a landmark achievement for healthcare innovation. It demonstrated how technology could overcome geographical barriers and expand access to specialised medical expertise. The initiative could help strengthen Guyana’s healthcare capabilities and support the development of a skilled workforce in robotic surgery, the President further explained.

The latest cardiac telesurgery has set a world record by surpassing the previous world’s longest telesurgery which was between Strasbourg, France and Indore spanning 10,000 kms. Meanwhile, H. E. Seeraj Dharamkumar, High Commissioner of the Republic of Guyana to India said, “The successful completion of the world’s longest-distance robotic cardiac telesurgery between Guyana and India is a remarkable milestone in the advancement of global healthcare. As Guyana continues to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure and embrace innovative medical solutions, collaborations such as this play a vital role in enhancing patient care and building future-ready healthcare capabilities”.

The latest feat achieved by the Indian-origin doctor with Made-in-India medical technology will indeed redefine the global medical ecosystem and make it future ready. Such innovations in the healthcare domain, harness healthcare facilities in a more affordable and accessible way even to the remote regions. It will bridge the gaps in the healthcare system in terms of region, financial assistance, manpower and technical capabilities in far off areas.

How was the robot operated and surgery conducted?

Dr. Sudhir Srivastava operated from Guyana using the SSI Mantr robotic system. It is a compact, chair-based robotic surgery command system designed to perform medical procedures from distant locations in real time. The patient-side robotic setup was stationed at the hospital in Indore, where the robotic arms and surgical instruments precisely replicated Dr. Srivastava’s hand movements from nearly 20,000 kilometers away. The system functioned with a network latency or delay of 290-300 milli seconds, thus allowing real-time communication.

The robot was equipped with high-definition 3D visualisation and other advanced, state-of-the-art mechanisms, thus complex cardiac procedure was possible with precision and stability despite the huge geographical distance. In India, the surgery was supported by various surgeons at the IRCAD hospital, who continuously monitored the functioning of the robot.

More about SSI Mantra surgical robot

The SSI Mantra surgical robot has been specifically designed to perform complex surgeries with procedural precision across high-latency, long-haul network environments. To date, more than 173 telesurgeries have been performed globally using the SSI Mantra surgical robotic platform. Additionally, the SSI Mantra system is the only system globally that has been used for robotic cardiac telesurgery, reflecting the capabilities of home-grown medical technologies of India.

The SSi Mantra surgical robot, developed by SS Innovations International, Inc(a firm expert in designing and developing surgical robotic technologies) is a user-friendly, modular, multi-arm system with advanced technology features. It includes, 3 to 5 modular robotic arms, an open-faced ergonomic surgeon command center, a large 3D 4K monitor, a touch panel monitor for all patient related information display, a virtual real-time image of the robotic patient side arm carts and the ability for superimposition of 3D models of diagnostic imaging.
