The Indian-origin cardiac surgeon Dr. Sudhir Srivastava is an expert robotic cardiac surgeon based in Guyana and is also the founder of SS Innovations. He remotely conducted a robot-assisted heart surgery to a patient situated in India. The surgeon and the patient were separated by a distance of 20,000kms. The remarkable feat in the telesurgery was, it was assisted by a Made-in-India surgical robot. The surgery was linked between Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation(GPHC), Guyana and IRCAD in Indore, India.
The surgery involved a Left Internal Mammary Artery(LIMA) takedown, which is a key step in the coronary bypass surgery. As mentioned the operation was assisted by the SSI Mantra robotic surgical system and the procedure was completed in approximately 4 hours and 50 minutes. The surgery was conducted over a fibre-optic network spanning nearly 20,000 kilometres, with a reported communication delay of around 290-300 milliseconds.

The latest cardiac telesurgery has set a world record by surpassing the previous world’s longest telesurgery which was between Strasbourg, France and Indore spanning 10,000 kms. Meanwhile, H. E. Seeraj Dharamkumar, High Commissioner of the Republic of Guyana to India said, “The successful completion of the world’s longest-distance robotic cardiac telesurgery between Guyana and India is a remarkable milestone in the advancement of global healthcare. How was the robot operated and surgery conducted?
Dr. Sudhir Srivastava operated from Guyana using the SSI Mantr robotic system. It is a compact, chair-based robotic surgery command system designed to perform medical procedures from distant locations in real time. The patient-side robotic setup was stationed at the hospital in Indore, where the robotic arms and surgical instruments precisely replicated Dr. Srivastava’s hand movements from nearly 20,000 kilometers away. The system functioned with a network latency or delay of 290-300 milli seconds, thus allowing real-time communication.
The robot was equipped with high-definition 3D visualisation and other advanced, state-of-the-art mechanisms, thus complex cardiac procedure was possible with precision and stability despite the huge geographical distance. In India, the surgery was supported by various surgeons at the IRCAD hospital, who continuously monitored the functioning of the robot.
